Is there any indication that these lenses are SDM-only? I think they'll follow the same scheme as the current SDM lenses and work with SDM when available or otherwise fall back to the internal motor.

There's no way to know, even looking at their bottom (which Pentax will not agree IMO) would not mean they might not change their mind later.

Sholdn't require a new body for those lenses.

If the 17-70 was f2.8 I'd think hard about it. If the 60-250 was 60-300 or f 2.8 I would think about it, too. Right now, I'm not sure it would replace the lightweight 50-200 and the longer 70-300.

With my leaky and screwy KHundredD, the WS and SDM are not factors

i'd take a cheap high quality f4 over high priced 2.8, but that's me. hopefully these will be backwards compatible, but i'm not sure if they will be.. also, the 17-70 should be a DA* as well.. hrrm.

The way i saw it, the 17-70 f4 was here to replace the current 16-45 f4, so no DA*

The Tamron 17-50/2.8 is exactly a f/2.8, cheap AND compatible lens (not a Sigma I mean...)
And the 17-70 is replacing the 16-45 so I do not see why the should make it a DA*.
DA* are supposed the be the cream of the best lenses. I do not expect a 17-70 to be that although it'd better be very good.

That being said, I do not like much the construction of that 17-70 (and 16-45 for that matter). I'd prefer DA*-like or DA14-like. I mean how the focussing system works and shows markings...

We don't even know if that 17-70 will be pre-K10D compatible (on AF pov).

will there be a f4 pairing to the 60-250, then? i'd think that they would want it to have a mate..

also, the tamron isn't exactly weatherproof, is it?

* Well the 17-70/4 is the one matching the 60-250. If you wanna DA*; then no or a longer one later maybe. But somehow, I understand why they would not label a 17-70/4 as a DA*, this is a middle market lens, nowhere near a 60-250/4.

* No the Tammy isn't wheather proof and neither is SDM. But it is a Tammy so you know Tamron had access to Pentax specs on the mount and you shouldn't get any compatibility problems (not a Sigma).

Tough choice, heh?

With a k20d (low noise at high ISO), the f4 lenses (assuming nice IQ) will be fine for me

Didn't someone mention recent that 17-70 f/2.8 was physically impossible to make? Variable aperture yes, fixed 2.8, no.
