Is the K-01 discontinued already? Some say Pentax is abandoning that project line, but I've yet to see an announcement that says the K--01's no longer being made, unlike the K-5.

It doesn't seem to be discontinued on the Japanese site. They even have a recent announcement that it won gold in the German Design Awards :-)

When asked directly about the future of the K-01 and that line of camera the people at Pentax have been evasive and said things like it was an experiment. The Q seems to be getting genuine support with the new Q10 and the 06 lens, plus the K-Q adapter. Only time will tell what will happen with the K-01 and whether there will be a K-02.

Matches the K-5 on image quality (or so the review says)
It does not match the K-5 as it only has 12bit raw... so that kills the DR. Which is the best thing about the K-5!

It doesn't kill it, it is just slightly smaller. By all accounts the K-5 has amazing DR (and great low ISO and noise reduction), but 12bit is still great and perfectly usable. I just think the word you used is a bit too strong

The next few weeks will tell, but I'm wondering a little whether the latest pricing action may be related to extremely limited supplies worldwide of the K5II and K5IIs. Just a speculation. At the moment they are rare as hen's teeth where I live and after speaking to my dealer on the phone I am beginning to wonder if there will be enough around to make purchasing one in a b&m store possible other than by making a reservation in advance.
I`m considering my first DSLR primarily to mount my K and M42 lenses.
I`ve been following K5 prices including that of the new model and the S also.
Surprisingly ,as yet, the K5 classic price seems to be holding firm in the UK .

About £673 ($673) for the K5, £800 ($1278) for the 2 and £930 ($1486) for the S .....body prices only of course.

So, why the price drop in bodies, but constant rise in lens prices? And why not the other way round. We don't buy one lens to share on multiple bodies, but the other way round.

the latter quote is what I was thinking about, which gives the uncertainty. The first quote however, is a sign that it's still in production.. so maybe, they've just abandoned the idea of "selling it as an expensive designer camera for the quirky fashionistas", and just as a simple mirrorless alternative?

Mine supposedly delivers tomorrow by end of day. Can't wait to get it. Never held one....no Pentax on display here in Minneapolis-St. Paul at all.
Got my K-01 a couple hours ago and I have to say I'm impressed. Very solid. Initial IQ seems to be absolutely on par with the K-5. The peaking feature (my big draw) works very well. I do wish, as some have mentioned, that you could switch the highlight color to something else. But that's minor.

The interface is nice and familiar as is the layout.

Glad I jumped right away...
