Ben -how is the new 55-300 Pentax zoom?

I figure if anyone knows how the new Pentax 55-300 mm Zoom is, it would have to be Ben. I'm thinking of buying one, when they come out.

I briefly got the chance to play with one (I was distracted more by the 200 f2.8 and the K20d my Pentax rep had brought with him and spent most of my time with those) and from what I could tell, it's basically a slightly larger 55-200. I unfortunately didn't get to closely examine any shots taken with it, but the build quality of the lens is pretty much on par with the old 55-200, and the design of the lens its pretty much the same as well with the exception that its about an inch or inch and a half longer. The extra range on the telephoto end is definitely a plus, and from what I've been told, the image quality should be on par with with new 18-55 II and the old 55-200. It will no doubt be slightly more expensive, but if you want the 300mm range, its the best way to get it without spending a lot of money or settling for the FAJ 75-300, which is larger still with lower build quality.

An interesting question would be Does it cover 35mm frame and if not, how.
If performance is about the sae as a Tamron 75-300, why would I buy a more expensive APS-C lens?

Since you mentioned the 18-55II...

Is the IQ on it any better than the current 18-55?

Thanks!

Thanks for the responses. Interesting to note that the poster who has handled it., compares it image quality to the 50-200, which I understand is a fairly decent lens. Sounds like it might be ok.
Thanks Ben for the response. If you do get a chance to use it, I would be in interested in your assessment.

Because it has 55-75 that the Tamron doesn't. I use that range a lot, one reason I swapped my 18-55 for a 17-70.

Yes, but when? I've had, enjoyed, and gotten great results with my Sigma 17-70 for a year now. I'm still waiting for solid news on the 60-250.

Anyone know when / whether the 55-300 is going to be available?
(Pentax formerly indicated May '08).

Ahh -- so it has. Just that the usual suspects don't seem to have it -- got it from Amazon. Thanks.
