I don't see much point in using a larger sensor with a slower lens.

Pentax MX-1 has a equivalent lens of 28-112mm f/8.4-11.6, and Sony RX100 28-100mm f/4.9-13.4, so you don't get much advantage of the larger sensor.
28/4.9 is not advantage?

A slight advantage ... yes ... but not as big as it might sound ...

It's an advantage, but not worth 25% extra on price IMO, and it's not worth the price of missing tilt-able LCD.
But as MX1 also got both longer reach with bigger aperture on the long end than RX100, it's clearly is a better camera for me.

And the Sony lens gets slower quickly when you zoom (it's f/7.6 at 34mm).

Remember that prices on Pentax gear drop after announcement. The K-5II cameras were marked down before many received the first shipments from B&H and Adorama. MSRP is just the top of the hill.

*sniff*
I'm with you on this point. If the K-01 had this look and an EVF, I'd be ecstatic.

I don't have anything to say about the MX-1's features, nor about its retro appearance. (Appearance, not design. Design is primarily about the way the features are implemented.) I am not in the market for an MX-1 but that doesn't mean I think no market exists or can exist, nor do I wish anyone who likes its features and appearance anything except all the best in shooting with it.

I object -- strongly, irrevocably -- to the LABEL.

The MX-1 tries to parrot the brand of the MX. By doing this, it only damages itself.

The MX was at the time a top-level pro or near-pro system camera. That happened to be small.
The MX-1 is not a system level, nor is it pro. It does happen to be small and vaguely octagonal, but GIVE ME A BREAK.

No camera is worthy of parroting the brand of a classic unless at the very minimum it replicates all of the functionality of the original.

That does not mean it's a bad camera. Not at all. But until the MX-1 is capable of performing astrophotography, micro-photography, medical imaging, macro work, and so on, it has no right to be called the "MX"-anything.

If Pentax-Ricoh tried to gain something by leveraging an old brand of the Asahi Optical Co., Ltd., all I will say is that as far as I am concerned they have failed miserably -- so miserably it would have been better not to do it at all.

just a quick thought....kind of related to this camera but not.

Back in the 90's, and even early melenia, film cameras were still in abundance. I remember in 2001 getting a Canon weather sealed "compact" film camera. similar in size to my K5 body aside from the grip/lens mount. But it took 35mm film. Why don't we see more 35mm format "compacts" like the Sony? Even lower resolutions ones. Why don't we see APS-C cameras even in this format? The MX-1, Nikon 7700, Canon G12...they are all in the upper echelon of compact cameras, but are still all using a small sensor.

why not take an "outdated" sensor like the one from the K20D, which still produces great images, and throw it into a "compact" body with a fixed lens like the RX100. But put it closer to that $500 price point.

Anyways, I still stand by the MX-1 until I get one in my hands and can evaluate it in person. I think it will be a fantastic street camera, maybe even better than the Q. I hope it's got good, fast, accurate auto focus... the Q kills me almost every time.

The sensor in K20D perform no better than the smaller sensor in RX100, so you just end up with a more expensive camera with no real advantage.

The only advantage of the K20D sensor is that it has 1/2 stop better noise performance than the RX100 sensor, but as you have to make the lens slower for a bigger sensor, you will end up with a camera that perform worse in low light.
DxOMark - Compare cameras side by side

Edit: If Pentax made a RX100 type of camera, with a APS-C sensor, they probably has to put $800 price on it.

true enough. okay, but just an RX100 type camera with APS-C. but maybe with a smaller lens profile? We were able to get small lenses on those "FF" point and shoots back then... why not now?

i know there would be a sacrifice in quality due to the glass.

Same thing with digital lenses... they have gotten so much bigger. My F 50mm 1.7 is so small compared to my Nikon G 50mm 1.8 or DA*55 1.4. the FA 77 is so small compared to the Nikon 85 1.8.... etc etc

Digital sensors today require more telecentric lenses, so the lenses grow in size compared to film cameras. This is probably something sensor manufacturers will improve the next 5-10 years.

But Fuji X100 is like you suggest, but is has a price tag of $1200. With a price tag of this I would prefer a ILC.
