true enough. okay, but just an RX100 type camera with APS-C. but maybe with a smaller lens profile? We were able to get small lenses on those "FF" point and shoots back then... why not now?
We can still get such small FF lenses, of course; let's say a 38-115mm f/3.9-10.5 like the Espio 115 had The quality would be more than good enough for 10x15cm prints.
The problem is, nobody makes them... wait, is that really a problem?

The sensor in K20D perform no better than the smaller sensor in RX100, so you just end up with a more expensive camera with no real advantage.
I don't think so...Sensor of K20D is better in terms of SNR18%, colour sensitivity, tonal range.

But the difference is small, and as you will end up with a slower lens with the K20D sensor you have to use higher ISO to get the same shutter speed as on RX100, making a compact P&S with K20D sensor perform worse in low light.

With good light using lowest ISO on both, it's probably the 1.3 stops higher dynamic range on RX100 that will make the biggest difference.

Compare camera dimensions side by side

Which would you choose?

just a quick thought....kind of related to this camera but not.

Back in the 90's, and even early melenia, film cameras were still in abundance. I remember in 2001 getting a Canon weather sealed "compact" film camera. similar in size to my K5 body aside from the grip/lens mount. But it took 35mm film. Why don't we see more 35mm format "compacts" like the Sony? Even lower resolutions ones. Why don't we see APS-C cameras even in this format? The MX-1, Nikon 7700, Canon G12...they are all in the upper echelon of compact cameras, but are still all using a small sensor.

why not take an "outdated" sensor like the one from the K20D, which still produces great images, and throw it into a "compact" body with a fixed lens like the RX100. But put it closer to that $500 price point.

Anyways, I still stand by the MX-1 until I get one in my hands and can evaluate it in person. I think it will be a fantastic street camera, maybe even better than the Q. I hope it's got good, fast, accurate auto focus... the Q kills me almost every time.
There are compacts with aps-c. Sigma, leica, fuji and canon (ok...they cheated a bit) all manufacture compacts with aps-c.

Edit: If Pentax made a RX100 type of camera, with a APS-C sensor, they probably has to put $800 price on it.
Pentax Ricoh DO make an APSC compact camera with a zoom lens. And yes it does have a high price tag.The GXR A16. As you can see, the camera itself is not the issue, which is as small as a G12. It's the lenses when you start ging to larger sensors - 24-85mm here is starting to get awkwardly large (it could be slightly smaller if it was only 28mm instead of 24mm though):

There's a reason they use small sensors on cameras meant to be compact zooms. 1" in the RX100 is about as big as they can go realistically and still be able to have a collapsible - and hence pocketable - zoom, and even then it requires a lot of in-camera barrel correction in software (the RAW files show a fish-eye effect at the widest 28mm).

And before anyone asks that Pentax Ricoh should make a fixed prime collapsible lens version then, like the Fuji X100 - they already do one of those too: the GXR 28mm. You guys really need to research your Pentax products, their range has expanded recently.

For the price of the OM-D and kit lens I can get the MX-1 plus a K-30 with a kit lens.

I agree the MX-1 looks better...
And I would still take the OM-D if I had the choice.

Considering the price ... I think I would go for the MX-1 any time of the day (even though I do like the OM-D as well).

As I already got ILC system, I will got with the smallest and cheapest one.

This might better show the difference in size.
Compact Camera Meter

And as OMD use a 2 stops slower kit lens, it will not have much low light advantage over MX1.

I agree with an earlier comment, that the K-01 would have been a success if it looked like this.
