This look with an FF behind the lens would of been stellar .

However,is it me or do the lens of the Pentax MX-1 and Olympus XZ-1 and ZX-2 look remarkably similar?? The coatings are different but the appearance of the barrel and the specifications look identical.

I wonder if the same OEM is behind the basic lens design??

It seems both the lenses on the XZ1 and the MX1 have the same number of elements arranged in the same way:

Olympus XZ-1 Camera - Express Review

Pentax MX-1 Camera - Hands-On Preview

So the MX-1 has the same lens as the XZ-1 and XZ-2 but with Pentax SMC?? It sounds like the lens is going to be fantastic!!

There are few shared optical designs, some made by Pentax, some by Tokina; there is one rebadged Tamon (which Pentax couldn't be bothered to design it themselves) - but no Pentax is a rebadged Tokina.
So a "shared optical design" and "shared physical design and construction" and "shared manufacturing" doesn't mean rebadged? Sure, whatever makes you feel more secure... but Tokina still makes very nice (and very... cough... familiar) 55-300mm and 18-135mm and 10-17mm lenses for other mounts (but their version of the 35mm macro is just huge!).

I only said "shared optical design", everything else you made up. Most of those lenses are designed by Pentax themselves, and every single one has a Pentax-specific physical and electronic design and construction, and are made in Pentax own factory (Vietnam).
The only exception (talking about SLR lenses) are the rebadged Tamron.

Re-badged will refer to a lens that was built completely by someone else, then Pentax took it an scrapped their name and slapped theirs in.
"Shared manufacturing" does not mean that 100% of the same parts were used in both lenses.

Best thing is to actually compare the blue prints and see what's what.

so am I... I guess. dangnabit!

I can't wait to see this thing.... hey Adam, why is this not on the front page?!

Anyways, where does this slot in now?

Q
MX
K01
K30
K5ii/s

or

MX
Q

They are two different cameras, but both I think are targeting similar people... the people who want more control over their photos, but want something compact. I see more benefits for the MX in my life over the Q. But the Q offers some advantages as well, ILC, hot shoe.

I am not sure if this is indicative of where they are going, and I am just wondering if this should raise my expectation in what is to come for us avid shooters. Going retro is not exactly trend setting. In fact, it may well be at the tail end of it. Not having to see the camera in person, I am not sure if I like the camera, or the nostalgia of it. But the overall feeling of the camera is very positive for me. It looks like a nice little camera.

Frankly I was hoping that a Pentax digital camera with the letters MX, especially in that magic outline, would have slightly different specs. To wit:

Full-frame sensor.
TTL optical viewfinder.
K-mount.
A shutter-speed dial.
Flash hotshoe.
Self-timer/DOF preview combo lever.

Yes, the rest of the octagonal case, the brass and all that is nice. But on balance this leaves me cold, if not uncomfortable.

You can aim the Q flash towards the ceiling? Wait, are you talking about the Q10? I had the original Q and I didn't think it was possible. This makes such a huge difference in flash photography that I'm amazed more cameras don't include this.
Does it really? I think that you have to have quite low ceiling... tiny flash dont have much power for bouncing.
Yes, I do this a lot with my Sony RX100. I even rigged up a tiny bounce card for some forward fill. :-)

asaru: I too am not overjoyed by this reusing of old flagship designations, for cheap point&shoots.

Well,it does seem the MX-1 and ZY-1 and ZY-2 share a similar lens. I wonder if Tokina was involved in the lens design and manufacter??

It's nice to see that Pentax finally release a P&S that actually can fun to use. As Pentax in the past has designed P&S lenses for other manufacturers, I wonder if the MX-1/XZ-1 is a Olympus or Pentax design?

Well, most of the shared optics between Pentax/Tokina is Pentax design. AFAIK only the DA 12-24 is a Tokina design.

DA 10-17 - Pentax design
DA 12-24 - Tokina design
DA* 16-50 - Pentax design
DA* 50-135 - Pentax design
DA 35 macro - Pentax design
DA 100 macro - Pentax design
