I was seriously considering the 560/5.6 since it appeared on the roadmap. I finally went for Sigma 500/4.5 after the price of the Pentax was revealed. Still I'd like to see comparison of these two not with used market rare FA*600 instead.

I would love too see it next to the Canon 200-400mm/f4 with inbuild converter at the long end. Maybe some off the other sides would do that comparison.

I expect the minimum focus distance of the Sigma is going to be much better than the Pentax just based on the design parameters
They've already announced the MFD. I don't recall what it was, but it was really bad. Close to 20 feet.

it's 5.6m, so ~18 feet. Which is a bit rubbish - I think the Sigma is about 4.0m...

Pentax announces 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 ED SDM and HD 560mm F5.6 ED AW: Digital Photography Review

The other concern I would have is only a one year warranty with such an expensive lens.

A link to download a .zip file containing 6 pictures taken with DA 560mm f/5.6 and one with FA* 600mm f/4, all of them with K-5 IIs. Half of them are cropped (see size in pixels). Photographer is Kentax-5 from kakaku.com.

You will find some comments concerning these pictures on Chassimages (in French).

Great photos. My French is pitiful so I can't figure out which shots are from which lens, or the critical Exif parameters. If someone would be willing to translate and explain it would be much appreciatied.

I'll see what can be done with the Sigma 500mm comparison. It's hard to get loaners this expensive but B&H has been very generous lately, so I'm confident that it will be approved by their management.

Only 1 is a FA and it's clearly labeled as such.

The 560 price will probably sell twice as many 500s...

Good news. I bought mine from B&H in December. Tell them we are still buying

Please measure the closest focus distance. This can influence the choice of which lens to purchase if one of them is able to focus significantly closer than the other.

For me, poor technique; why using the FA*600 wide open at 1/1000 for an eagle standing on the ground ? A lower speed would have been appropriate, and the FA*600 is knwown to be soft wide open; why using the 560 at f14 for the seagull in flight ? And the shot of the kingfisher with the fish at 1/100, here a higher speed would have been appropriate, as the fish who doen't probably want to be eaten induce motion blurr.
Let us see how the lens behave when used at its optimal settings

Some seem to think the price will come down on this lens. I'm confused, and wonder how that can be with Pentax sticking to it's guns on the MAP program, or, is there something I am missing? Thanks......
