Pentax 645 Digital Announced!

Along with the selection of three new DA* lenses, Pentax has just announced their 645 digital camera body.

Pentax currently claim that it will have an 18-megapixel sensor, but they added that the camera may potentially have up to 30 megapixels, depending on the final sensor choice.

See the source here: PENTAX NEWS release 2006 : PENTAX to Exhibit Upcoming Digital SLR Camera Products at Photokina 2006 in Germany

Pentax was also kind enough to release 2 nice images of the camera:

Looks like a clunker, glad I pre-ordered the sexy K10D already. I'm guessing this will sell with the existing Pentax 645 users, but I couldn't find a use for it.
The continuous upgrade sounds interesting, I wonder how they're going to pull it off.

Hi,
The past 10 months I have invested in 645 lenses, expecting for the release of the 645D. Last December I had only 645N body+75/2.8 standard lens. Now my collection of 645ers is almost completed.
A35 f3.5
FA 75 f2.8
FA 120 f4 macro
FA 200 f4
FA 400 f5.6
A 600 f5.6
FA 45-85 f4.5
FA 80-160 f4.5
I only need a wide prime because 35mm is not so wide with the croped factor of the new 645D.
All the lenses I got are second hand but in mint condition.

Pentax 645 Digital

I know most arn't interested in the 645D, but I hope by the time it comes to market I will have one. I think it will add great things to the studio.

That's a little too much- I've heard it will be between $5500 and $6000

That is a pretty nice collection. Can you comment on the optical/mechanical quality of these lenses. And if one should only want one lens, which one should he take? The 75?

has anyone speculated yet on the compatibility of new Digital 645 lenses with APS K cameras? If (IF) the new 645 lenses will be with internal ultrasonic motors, would be posiible that they would be fully automatic on the small format Pentaxes? Or a mechanical transmission for the automated diaphragm would still be needed?

I don't know, but since they're releasing the D-FA 645 55mm in mid 2007, I wouldn't be surprised to see it around that time.

I doubt that the 645 wil use any sort of USM. It is not designed to be a blazing fast camera. Its designed to be a fast Med. Format (645) camera. Compair the AF and FPS on any 645N and up its much faster than a old TLR or Hassy.
However that being said,. I can not waite till it comes out. I dont shoot w/ a 645 but I would love to see the detail this thing gives

Well now I have something to add to my lottery winning wish list. 31mp would be a lot of fun for landscape work. I would love to experiment with MF, it would be a b&(^ to carry around though.....
