I though the DA40 inherited the formula of the M40, therefore it had to be full frame compatible.

Something weird is that the DA40 vignets quite a bit on APS-C, so the above might not be true...
Also, although it can cover FF, it's really soft in the corners. Someone did a comparison with the Canon 40mm (an FF lens) and the difference in the corners was clear as day. It has been clearly optimized for APS-C.

So for shallow DOF work it's fine but as an all around lens it's sub par on FF.

Seeing that the market seems enamored with 'vintage' Pentax would do well to consider making a LX-D and a MX-D (yes a manual only Digital). I used to own an LX (and MX) and it was a gorgeous camera. People would go nuts for these, I know I would, even though I have a couple of Nikons.
Count me in! I've been looking for a simple old school type camera to complement my big and heavy Nikon kit for travel and street. Right now I'm eyeing the X-Pro 1, but that would immediately change if Pentax came out with the camera you are describing.

That would be a bad move - pentax re-designed the lens hood for the DA 25mm f/4 ED ASPH so that it actually serves a purpose in terms of its 19.5mm focal length on the 645D sensor, if they make the sensor any bigger vignetting with that lens could be...very problematic.
Well, i am not that sure.
Pentax still produces the D-FA 25/4 lens for internal market film shooters.
The new HD D-FA 90/2.8 macro covers FF 645 as did the D-FA 55/2.8
It would be logical to upgrade the digital 645 sensor size within actual 35mm over-megapixel growth environment.

And I have some legacy FF lenses in my bag ......
Since I got into the hobby, I've been shooting a K1000, MX, LX, and ME Super alongside my digitals....as I haven't much money to dedicate to photography, I've been careful to buy full frame lenses with aperture rings pretty well exclusively for my fleet, except for the 18-55 weather sealed and sigma 10-20.

If the FF pentax digital hits, I'll be ready.

I will not stop laughing if on 4/1 they announce a K-300 with 5 different colors: black, white, yellow, pink and green

Go have a look at the very first picture here: Pentax-Objektive an KB digital - DSLR-Forum

I didn't invest any major effort into these test shots but the corners I see on the DA40 to me is a lot worse than vignetting (which can be corrected to a very high degree). You would need to crop that away.
It is not soft. Its's super soft. Look at the right solar panel (or sun screen), but why is f/22?

I see what you mean...it seems like a sudden drop in sharpness, not gradual (as one would expect).

I have been noticing something similiar to this effect on my Sigma 1.4 (which is often criticized for corner softness). I think it's not softness per se, but a radical change in field curvature and/or distortion.

asahi man has been fairly accurate.

Happy spinning.

Unless the 24 mp has renewed and wondrous AF and tracking with more AF points, I'll likely wait for the next round or two.

I have quickly read through the previous posts, so I might have missed it if someone already posted this.... FA ltd's are getting some pretty huge rebates right now which I haven't seen in my time at pentax, is this an indication of a pending FF announcement or am I just clutching at an elaborate fantasy?

Maybe they will provide a real upgrade to the K5? With an 's' version, that's two cameras.

The new 645D, thats three.

A new entry level, thats four.

FF, five?

Well we will see, this month doesn't have much left.

More from asahi man

So, the K-? with the (Sony) 24MP sensor must be the $2k cam in your view. Is it FF?

A: No,lower price.

And there is still no "Fullframe".

2000$ is not to see

The rebates on FA Ltd lenses are only if you buy a K-5IIs, so it may say more about that camera than those lenses. Interesting though: there has been discussion that the eventual Pentax FF will not be K-mount, which would be annoying for those with a stash of K-mount lenses. Could they be running out the FF FA lenses? If so though, why tie it to the K-5IIs?
