The Sigma Art 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM is a new lens with a new optical formula: 9 elements in 8 groups instead of 7 elements in 7 groups for the old one, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM.

In addition to a new optical formula the new lens gives an extra aperture blade (9 instead of 8) and closer minimum focusing distance (0.9 ft instead of 1.3 ft).

Their conclusion numbers severely over-weigh sharpness and transmitted light, while ignoring bokeh. I'm confused as to who this is relevant for. Handheld moonlit landscape pictures?
Handheld reproduction work with macro lenses

I hope they will use the K-5 IIs for testing now so the AA filter of the K-5 won't taint results.

$900 for a 35mm lens?

A question, and forgive me because I really don't know much about this, but is it $750 better than the older SMC Pentax-A 35mm F2.8 (priced today at $145 in the lens database)?

Two f-stops brighter, and autofocus equals plus-$750?

The 31mm is almost a stop slower and is $450 more expensive. Sigma's usually sell for a bit less than MSRP, too, so you might be able to get the sigma for half the price of the Pentax.

It's about the same cost as the Nikon which is slower.

Most people buying lenses (heavily Canon/Nikon weighted) today want AF, so I'm not sure a comparison to the "A" is reasonable.

Understood. But you know, last night on PBS, I was watching a scientist from Carnegie-Mellon University's CyLab, about biometric imaging. Working on facial recognition, like for the Boston bombing suspects. His problem -- to create a high-IQ picture from a lo-res original -- sounded like the Holy Grail for camera manufacturers... if there are software breakthroughs. Small lens... smaller sensor!

Just imagine -- that little P&S might be re-branded as a pro camera! And, getting back to the above two posts, will probably be re-priced higher too.

Cannot even begin to compare the optics. Take a look at the size and weight of the Sigma; the Pentax simply cannot match it

For those who are curious, I've learned that this lens has been slightly delayed, but it will start shipping to retailers in the third week of May, so we should have one in our hands by the end of the month

Nice. Do you know if this start date is worldwide or US only? - The guys at Sigma really give me a hard time. First they delay until (excactly) the day of return from the biggest Voyage of my life and now until the two "most important" (a little bit too big words for a hobby photographer ) shoots I'd had so far.

Yeah, it's amazing how much detail you can extract from a single pixel

Are there any plans for testing the Sigma 55mm f4.5? Thanks

I am waiting for FA 31 VS Sigma 35 battle.
Im just as interested in the DA 35 2.4 vs the Sigma 35 comparisons.

Yeah, I know it is a lot faster, but for the price, will it be 4 times better as we all know just how good the DA 35 is..
