55mm 4.5 - that must be a typo?

Though there are actually large format lenses with that FL and max aperture:

My thoughts, too ... I really like my DA 35/2.4 and cannot see a lens costing 4X being also 4X better in IQ ! J

Optics and construction; plus the fact that the Sigma is made in Japan.

...Or one could generally wait a few months from when the more recent Sigma is released. Percentage wise it will sell for more used.

It is unfortunate though, better optics unfortunately come at a higher money price, but also at a much higher weight, also longer and wider lenses.

$900 for a 35mm lens?

A question, and forgive me because I really don't know much about this, but is it $750 better than the older SMC Pentax-A 35mm F2.8 (priced today at $145 in the lens database)?

Two f-stops brighter, and autofocus equals plus-$750?
Get the SMC Pentax-A 35mm F2.8 for $145 if that is what you want to spend but the 35mm F1.4 Sigma is much sharper from F1.4 to F2.8 than the Pentax 31mm F1.8 from F1.8 to F2.8 and also cost hundreds less.

They got a bad copy of FA31. I can't tell much difference in center resolution between 1.8 and 4 on my copy

I agree, look at photozone's mtf figures, there's a difference in the centre resolution of only 8% between wide open and the sharpest aperture. the photozone copy/analysis matches my experience of my copy, it's exceptionally sharp at all apertures.

My copy of a Sigma 35/1.4 should arrive today. I'll be testing it out on a FF camera. It looks promising.

No doubt. Lately I've been wanting lenses that render warmth and have good, smooth bokeh over sharpness especially for people pictures. I wanted the Zeiss 35/1.4 since l liked the examples people have posted but with its manual focus it's too much of a specialty lens for its price for me right now.

Sigma lenses are good, especially, sharp. In my experience, at same aperture and focal length, sigma is always sharper than pentax. However, I sold all the sigma lenses that I tried. I love the rendering of pentax lenses. Even the photos taken with SMC takumar do not need any post processing to improve color. I can not do that even with modern sigmas.
