This doesn't bode well for the K-3 being all that interesting. It looks like we'll probably be getting basically a K-5II with a 24mp sensor, maybe a new body, but nothing radical if it's going to replace the K-5II.
It should be a new body if it follows the pattern (k10/20d, k7/5). I say it isn't too soon because the K5ii/s really is an incremental update. Not only was it just some internal upgrades, but it was also released at at 25% cheaper MSRP (expect the K-3 to be back to the real MSRP, or close to it). Not to mention it has already been discounted several times, and they have the current, awesome rebates going on with the limited lenses, all designed to move inventory and make way for the latest and greatest! I won't be buying myself, but it should be the first truly ricoh release, and I expect it will be a pretty nice update to the flagship. Just my thoughts!

Pentax will do bigger jump than from D7000 -> D7100...they jump over both of them!

Seriously spoken. Good viewfinder, more focuspoints, better DR and smoking ISO would do it for me. Talk about that focus speed later...

Take take "best APS-C", it's gonna need better AF than the D7100, and probably better than the upcoming Canon 7D2.
Not necessarily - "the best" isn't on top in every category - that's rarely possible. But they do need to continue to improve the AF. If it could even match Canon or Nikon in this regard it would be very impressive and unexpected. I just hope the new model(s) come close, and Pentax doesn't stop there.

the D7100's excellent video, buffer
Is there another version of the D7100 out?
  • One which is able to correctly show the recording (=aperture/DoF) in video mode? (K-5 does)
  • Or one that has a buffer to hold more than 6 max quality RAW files? (K-5: 20-25)
Or did you want to write "abysmally poor" when you used the word "excellent"?

The K-3 will be Pentax's newest flagship prosumer camera weighing-in at 24mp.
It is slated to replace the latest generation K-5 units and reestablish Pentax's reputation as the best APS-C camera on the market.

There is also be a new 645D II and other lower entry level DSLR's aimed at replacing the K-30 etc.

And so, it looks like the new lineup that is rumored to consist of 5 DSLR's is looking something along the lines of: K3, K3s, 645D II, K30 replacement thus far.

Who is the buyer of K-3 with APS-C? It's logical upgrade of K-5II. And nothing else.
Too fast, by the way.

K-30 and K-5II are rather advanced cameras....

Either way it has to be a monster APS-C camera to justify that cost.
