Tokina (and Pentax?) 12-28/4

Tokina just announced a 12-28/4 DX lens, which is replacing the 12-24/4.

http://www.tokina.co.jp/camera-lenses/wide-lenses/at-x-12-28-pro-dx.html]AT-...| ????? | ???? (in Japanese)

I'd bet this is the DA wide zoom on Pentax's 2013 roadmap. If Pentax makes it WR, this would be a no-brainer purchase for me.

Haven't seen any English announcements yet, but thought it worth sharing.

Specifically mentions optimization for 20MP sensor, SDM, and supposedly better resolution on the long end. The Canon mount comes out end of April, and Nikon end of June. Wonder if the Pentax version will include Quick Shift ? or WR ? Regardless, I think I will stick with the 12-24 for now.

I had wondered the same at the end of January with this post. As you can read, the 12-28mm focal length makes sense to some Pentaxians and no sense to others. I will happily buy a lens like this one provided that it has the qualities that count most to me: good edge-to-edge sharpness.

A bit off topic, but has anybody heard about any developments on the DA Limited zoom? I'd be more interested in a compact, high-quality ~ 22 - 40mm zoom with good build quality than the ultra-wide currently under discussion.

Waiting for the ltd. zoom, too, but haven't heard anything about it since the release of the roadmap. My speculation: it's going to be a remake of the FF capable FA 20-35/4.

I will most likely get the 12-28/4.0 lens if Pentax really gets it out and if it is weather-sealed. The Limited zoom is one that interest me but will have to wait and see how it performs. The 17-85 or whatever it ends up being is also very interesting. I really want the 135-400 or whatever it ends up being, especially if it is at least a f5.6 or better lens. Still there is not much new on anything coming out from Pentax/Ricoh excpet for we are thinking abut things and wait a little bit and you will be excited about the new things, whatever they end up being.

I am copying here the message I posted last Friday in the "Non-Pentax Cameras: Canon, Nikon, etc." section.

This could well be the Tokina version of the "DA Wide Zoom" one sees on the Pentax roadmap.

- Push-pull AF-MF focus clutch
- 9 aperture blades
- Minimum focusing distance: 0.25m (a bit less than 10")
- Maximum magnification ratio: 0.2x / 1:4.94

Maybe, maybe not.
Sadly, the excellent Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 never made it to K-mount. It is quite popular in other cropped-sensor mounts.

If past patterns persist, it will probably sell for close to half of the Pentax equivalent.
