At 28mm the GR will spank a RX100. Above that (aside from the 35mm crop function on the GR), the GR is out of the game.
Well the RX-100 sensor is about 1.5 stops smaller. The DxOMark low light score shows this, with the RX-100 having a score of ISO 390 vs the K-iis score of 1208. I'm guessing the GR will have a similar performance to the K-iis. So, a 1.5 stop difference in area, yields a 1.5 stop difference in low light performance. BUT, the RX-100 lens is about 1.3 stops faster than the GR. It has a max aperture of F/1.8 vs F/2.8. So for lower light shooting, they should be pretty similar. If you have enough light to shoot the GR at ISO 100, it should reach a level of performance the RX-100 can't touch.

I own an RX-100, and I'm thinking of selling it to buy the GR. What I love about the RX-100 is is small size and versatility. I rigged up a mini-bounce card that I taped to the pop up flash. I also taped a small tab to the back of the flash so I can easily aim the flash at the ceiling and also aim my mini-bounce card to do some forward fill. It's a very effective combo and very pocketable. The 20MP sensor is really nice and the HDR modes work well. However, I kinda feel like the Sony was designed for gadget lovers and the Ricoh was designed for photographers.

Better yet, if they can offer a K-series in many colours, surely a package with the OVF and 21mm adapter could be an upsell option pulled up at the B&H website with every search. Not hard to do and pre-empts the rabid VF crowd like Rockwell (who is one of many). He's a Nikon guy at heart and he slams the Coolpix A for exactly the same reason.
OVF is one thing (and IMO calculated one) about not including one into the body: size.
GX serie had an option for one though. Integrated VF has never been part of GR since digital.

Another thing is Rockwell and his GR aperture/speed wheels comment and I'm sorry to say but that remark is real BS, and a smoking one.

Pentax Ricoh really needs to take these erroneous reviewers on and put this stuff right back in their faces somehow. Ken Rockwell is just taking advantage of Pentax's inability to respond (due to their size and market "reach") when he makes such BS pronouncements. I'm thinking assymetric warfare - we're the insurgents - vs. the entrenched, structure-bound paradigm.

Get some young, internet-savvy warriors on board in Japan and Denver and drop little vids all over YouTube. Make special weblets like the GR website and point people to it - build up our own webhits and Hitbox Google ourselves.

Drop buzzworhty product after product after product for 2 years and FORCE Ken Rockwell and DPReview to talk about US - good talk or bad talk doesn't matter - instead of everyone else.

Just be a total pain in their (back pockets) all the time and build our own kind of counter-cultural cool.

Actually, Ricoh seem already to have that in spades - transfer THAT to the Pentax brand!!

Instead of saying, "Yes, its a Pentax," I can just hear myself saying to some dude, "I don't shoot Canon," and walking away.

I'm getting a real competitive vibe from myself right now - I hope it is because Pentax Ricoh is starting and not just wishful thinking on my part.

"No viewfinder of any kind (just hold it in front of your face like an iPhone to compose or go ahead and order the two viewfinder models that have been available for the line for about 10 years), no clunky retro-looking aperture or shutter-speed dials that are difficult to change whist framing a shot. It's like a car without a steering wheel which has instead been replaced by mind control; technical progress to some people means that critical functions and opinions be delegated to a menu or button and dial system or b.s. website. At least that's not the case here.

Good luck!
There I fixed it for him. Does anyone have his email addy to send the copy to?

Yeah, I have to agree. Ricoh's cameras - at least over the past 20 years - have been remarkably serious and well-thought.

Mike Johnston at The Online Photographer has some interesting thoughts on the new GR... and the use of an OVF at the GR's focal length(s)...

He seems to think this camera has a great place and he'll like it - which to him means ....
"Too early to tell for sure (I mention again lest anyone leap off cliffs of premature conclusions), but it looks to me like the GR might prove out to be one of those cameras that might not be widely popular among "consumers" but that could well earn a smallish but devoted following of dedicated photographer users who love it, like to use it, and whose work it suits. Which would make it just the sort of device we approve of."

Hear the full scoop on the RICOH GR from PENTAX's senior marketing manager himself, Mr. John Carlson.

Hey, I know the guy doing that interview with Carlson! I worked with Fred Fishkin in local radio and again at Bloomberg 20 years later.

I think they need a crazy lens for the 808, CZ with all aspheric elements IIRC. It would be awesome if they could scale it up to APS-C or u4/3 size sensor in a form factor similar to GR or Coolpix A with 100+ MP and a heap of electronics to make something reasonable out of it
IIRC, there was an interview with CZ where they explained that the 808 lens design wouldn't scale to larger form factors because of limitations of materials used.

But the 808 lens does the job as it is. An 1" sensor isn't that small, just an 1.35x crop factor relative to uFT. So, the 808's F2.4 lens geathers as much light (and has the same DoF) as a uFT F3.2 lens would have. But in a MUCH smaller package and unprecedented resolution.

I am still trying to make sense of the new marketing pitch. 'Be your eyes...Because the GR will become your new eyes.' I think they need to step up the promo material. I do like what I see, though.

Good to see this and yes it is a more sensible price than the Nikon (well overpriced that one)
2 things, fixed lens and I think it should have an OVF built in, Fuji get this Ricoh don't a mistake IMO
Also for a fixed lens camera, 28mm is not my choice...35mm would be more useful for general purpose.

For this reason once the X100s price has dropped (as it will like the X100) IMO that's the way to go no question. But nice to see something, and the lens does look decent sharpness wise
