Im looking for a pocketable good camera and this GRD seems very interesting.

However, how does it compare with the Sony RX100 ?

Is the sensor size difference that much in favour of the GRD ?

At 28mm the GR will spank a RX100. Above that (aside from the 35mm crop function on the GR), the GR is out of the game.

I wonder what RRP price CRK will set for the GR in Australia?

God knows. The GRDs are always set high. It will be more than B&H, thats why I'll probably end up buying from there. Of course, we could get lucky and it will be around $750. But I won't hold my breath.

As it happens, that's the same price that CRK have been selling the Sigma DP1M and DP2M at (last time I looked). It's not a bad price for the GR, but lower would be better, of course.

Well, Ken Rockwell has chimed in with his thoughts on the GR:

"No viewfinder of any kind (just hold it in front of your face like an iPhone to compose), no aperture or shutter-speed dials. It's like a car without a steering wheel; technical progress to some people means that critical functions be delegated to a menu or button and dial system.

Good luck!

The Fuji X100s is so much better; mine just arrived."

He is demonstrating a real lack of understanding...
Doesn't it have 2 dials? I saw two dials on the body, one in the front and one in the back.

Yeah, but KR need dials with aperture and shutter speed numbers to understand how a camera works, unless of course the camera has a Canon or Nikon sticker on it.

The other unknown is the effect of IS. To limit it to the 35mm focal length (FF equiv.), how does Sony's 20 MP and IS with a much smaller sensor measure up to the Ricoh's (and by extension through cropping, Nikon's) 10 MP and larger sensor but without IS?

What he is demonstrating is the knack for saying things that drive site traffic. Nothing more.

To be fair, he's an optical VF fan...like many here who cannot conceive of properly sighting and framing a photo without an ocular.

That the GR has an OVF option is missed not only by Rockwell, but by many. Ricoh should include a $50 of voucher for OVF with every GR sold. Let the consumer know that they "pro up" their kit and be supported in doing so.

Better yet, if they can offer a K-series in many colours, surely a package with the OVF and 21mm adapter could be an upsell option pulled up at the B&H website with every search. Not hard to do and pre-empts the rabid VF crowd like Rockwell (who is one of many). He's a Nikon guy at heart and he slams the Coolpix A for exactly the same reason.

GR | PENTAX RICOH IMAGING

Somewhere in Ricoh Pentax HQ, in a product brainstorming session:
"So we're going to release this in 15 color combinations okay? I see a Hello Kitty special edition, and a Mobile Suit Gundam Wing version..."
<SLAP!>
"Okay, how many times do we need to explain this. We're Ricoh now. We make cameras. If your idea is an existing product in a different color, please put your ID on the table and leave the room. Now does anyone have an idea for a ca-mer-ah?

And I swear, if you mention the color of the body, you get another slap."
"Sir, Marc Newson is calling again on line..."
"On the line you're going to hang up now? Excellent."
With all respect due, I am tempted to think that this is not the way it works at Ricoh.
