Will be interesting to see how they price it.

If it is close to $2K, a prospective buyer could just as well get a FF body and a Tamron 28-75 F2.8.

Under $1K and I think they'll sell very well.

Somehow I find it ironic that they're marketing a FF alternative lens for mounts with 3 current generation FF cameras (Canon and Nikon), including "cheap" options, and plenty of fast lenses already, while neglecting mounts with 1 and 0 FF (Sony and Pentax respectively), and lacking in fast wide angle lenses.

It will cost ~ $1,5K

Sony have FF.
Sigma will make Pentax mount. But more interesting if Pentax can make lens like this.

Maybe if Pentax promisses to Sigma to not come with a FF camera, we can get it in a K-mount?

This indeed is a very innovative lens...but 800g is too heavy for my taste.

Pentax should make a 810 g monster lens for APS-C only? I don't think so.

It would be much more interesting if they made a fast and compact ~18mm prime lens.

What if that monster comes with cute 250-300 g MILC flat like sony NEX kit body?

I guess I'm not particularly interested. Fast apertures and wide angles just don't do much for me. And this lens isn't even that wide (or long) and it is 50 percent heavier than the 16-50 f2.8. If Pentax wants to do something, they could work to improve the 16-50 lens and stop with that, as far as I am concerned.

Oh well...

For $1.5K I'd rather have a DA15 and FA31.

Or buy a 2nd hand D5MkII with a Tamron 28-75 and gain a new body in the process.

This lens may totally change my mind about primes. I have probably to find more work to save some money for this beauty.
Yep, and also start saving for some money for the new body. Because this lens will not be available in Pentax K mount.

From the Dpreview press release: "Lens mount Canon EF, Nikon F (DX), Sigma SA"

A very interesting lens; Sigma is certainly trying new things. I wonder (I'm afraid I'm still not good enough at comprehending lens designs just by looking at them) if this lens in essence has a built-in tele-compressor (as Olympus was supposed to have done in designing its f2 zooms); that would explain in part how they've managed to get the lens this fast, and it would also explain the rather wide focal lengh. A fun piece of trivia: in 1983, Tokina previwed (but never did release) both a 35-70mm f2-2.5 and 60-120mm f2-2.5 (for full-frame, of course).

Here is the lens construction. In blue the lenses in SLD glass (Special Low Dispersion), in pink the (moulded) aspherical lenses.

Indeed, the two rear groups build a converging system, hence a focal and aperture reducer.

1- sigma is clearly abandoning pentax mount for new release...3 out of 4 are not in pentax mount and the most useful fo us.

2. pentax should stop useless ff plan and begind coming out with serious and fast lenses for k mount, like those produced by sigma.
