Big lens.
I am sure a smaller F2.8 version would satisfy people who like smaller lenses but an ultra fast 18-35mm F1.8 zoom with 72mm filter thread is not too big for people who like fast zooms.

Fully agree. I think f1.8 in a zoom is extremely useful for low light venues, especially if it's good wide open. If not, theoretically by the time you stop down to the 2.8 of the current fastest zooms (minus Olympus's f2 43 zooms), the image should be better than those zooms wide open. I think any idea that this is not at the very least a worthwhile venture is ridiculous. Sigma is striving to make improvements, kudos to them for doing so. I honestly find it difficult to believe that CaNikon hasn't done the same.

I agree...
Canikon is too busy making FX lenses.
Thom Hogan's biggest beef with Nikon is their lack of loyalty to the DX consumer.

The real bummer about this is that DX is awesome. I never really realized how awesome it was until I owned the K-5 IIs. It's so compact; it's the perfect in-between of mirrorless and full frame bodies. Absolutely comfortable, easy to carry, and just makes sense. LOVE my Sigma 50-150mm 2.8 zoom. It's fast, light, and a great size. Perhaps previously DX didn't make as much sense because sensor tech wasn't there yet. But it is now. I think the D7100 is an incredible camera with a lot of attractive features (though I prefer my Pentax for sheer enjoyment and usability), and the K-5 IIs is incredibly competent; easily good enough for pro work.
I think the crop factor is also helpful in certain types of photography.

Hopefully we'll see more dedication to the DX lines, but what a bummer that Sigma seems to be leaving Pentax behind. I certainly hope (but am fearful) that doesn't continue.

I hate to quote Thom again, but he has said numerous times that he is always surpised at how many pro DX shooters there are.
I agree...but not because the IQ difference is so much difference when shooting FX versus DX. I agree because Nikon tends to only put "pro features" - fully weather sealed, top of the line AF, on body controls - on the FX cameras. The D300 was the last DX that did that. The D7100 is up there too, but DX users are still clamoring for a D400, and pro level DX lenses, after all these years, because the market does exists.

Some us like the bokeh/shallow DOF, are not too bothered about the size of the lens and are not obsessed with sharpness.

I love the sample images posted. I want this lens, I already have plenty of lenses to get 18 to 35 at 2.8

People want 24-70 F/2.8's on ff. This is a 24-50 f/2.8 on FF, not perfect but nice. I'm sure it'll be sharper at f/2.8 than f/1.8, but that's true of every lens.

Yes, it's like f/2.8 on FF, but no, it's not like 24-50 - it's equivalent to 28-54 on Nikon or 29-56 on Canon. 24mm and 28mm is quite a difference...

This rings true to me, but the fact is regardless of it's stellar quality, I drag out my SDM 50-135mm pretty darn infrequently and that is entirely a result of it's size and weight. I'll stick to a fast wide and standard prime, respectively.

The samples are impressive!
I'm surprised they don't offer it for Pentax, as i'd like to have one - until Pentax makes a FF that is!

Up until recently, I thought that Sigma still had our back. But lately it's looking like were being Tamron'ed...by Sigma.

Tamron'ed or Zeiss'ed or Voigtländer'ed, for that matter: same cause (too low a market share, hence too low sales, actual or prospective, in K mount), same behaviour.

From there it's kind of a "vicious circle" Pentax Ricoh will have to break: limited market share of K mount --> limited third-party offer in K mount --> limited appeal of K mount --> limited market share and so on.

well it is understandable why Sigma is cutting pentax out of the market - the Ricoh GR/GXR is competing head to head with the DP2 series cameras.
