Considering all the draw backs of in-lens OS
Add repair cost to that list. I recently read a Canon horror story about a guy who bought a 24-105 used for a good price, used it for a couple months, then it died, leaving him facing a $650 repair bill...

As was, for example, the 2013 model Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM, and a few of their other recent OS consumer zooms.

I hope that Sigma makes it available for K-mount. I shoot musical performances pretty often and a fast 200mm equiv. would be welcome for the times you are shooting from a closed balcony.

I rented the Canon 200L a couple of times for weddings where we had balcony access and we could have a 2nd or 3rd tog present.

The DA* 200mm is to long and the D-FA* 100mm macro is just too slow (AF) and to short for many large interior venues. My Sigma 85mm is a phenomenal lens, but too short for many venues. A 135mm F/1.8 would be a welcome addition to my bag.

Hopefully Pentax releases a new D-FA* 50mm F/1.2, D-FA* 85mm F/1.4, & D-FA* 135mm F/1.8 to go with the new Pentax FF body.

That would certainly get my attention!

Thanks for the explanation. I prefer IBIS as well because i don't have to pay for it more than once :-), and the lenses can be smaller in size. But perhaps the camera and lens makers like OIS because it can be tailored to individual lenses. I read recently that Nikon's VR has gone through 6 iterations, in newer lens designs. Whatever that means.
I think it means that they can sell the same lens 6 times to folks that have to have "cutting edge" VR in their lens.

Honestly, from a camera maker stand point, having image stabilization in the lens is a way you can add an extra charge to already expensive lenses. In addition, as "upgrades" come, people have to change lenses to get them. Not sure if there is that much improvement in the Nikon 70-200 from VR I to VR II, but you sure pay for that improvement.

You should find a used copy of the FA 135 f2.8 -- it is really fast auto focusing and I don't think you would miss the difference between f1.8 and f2.8.

The 135mm f/2.8 would have to be pretty incredible to recommend itself over the Pentax 50-135mm f/2.8 or Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8.

It sounds like he is shooting in dim environments, and f/1.8 will allow a significantly faster shutter speed than f/2.8. That's the exact reason I purchased my Sigma 85mm f/1.4

I shoot at F/2 and F/2.8 a lot. For an inside event it is rare I go as small as F/4.0. My Sigma 85mm is very sharp at F/2.0 and by F/2.8 its really, really sharp. I use it a lot at F/4 when I can, but I need a lens that is really good at F/2.0 - F/4.0.

The DA* 50-135mm that I tried was not acceptable at 135mm F/2.8. I had to stop it down to F/4 to get really sharp images. Then there is the issue of only buying FF glass. I would rather buy a Sigma 135mm F/1.8 that will work on a FF and APS-C than buy a DA* lens that only works on an APS-C. That was one factor that lead me to buy the Sigma 50mm F/1.4 over the DA* 55mm.... I might still buy a DA*55mm just because I want a WR lens in that focal length, but I will keep the Sigma 50mm F/1.4. I will buy a FF Pentax when it is released.

I suspect you'll be OK with the DA* 55mm for FF, for what it's worth.

I'm with you on all other points. Dark events don't go well with F/4 and even F/2.8 is sometimes pushing it.

My 50-135/2.8 is sharp as tack even wide open... when AF is not an issue.
Too slow to focus, indeed. But when it manages to focus; it really kicks bottom
