K20D/K200D hit Brisbane (Australia)

So I took a walk downtown and wandered into Ted's to get some Tri-X, and, lo and behold, they've got the two new K's in. And if memory serves me well, they've moved the Pentaxes from the front in the small, dinky display case to the back of the store (where they're more visible to the shopper.)

Apparently, they just got them in today.

The K10D and K100D Super are still on the little plastic display stands (they only seem to have two stands...) which I guess is fair enough as they'd want to move them out as fast as possible.

I asked about the BG10 battery grip - they'd, quote "have to order them in." Sigh. As always.

On all the cameras, save the K100D, they had the DA 18-55mm. I didn't ask if that was the kit lens. Will if I go in again. The K100D had the Sigma 10-20mm on it.

Rainer's Camera House has them in as well.

Price given for the K20D at Ted's was $1750, body only (Note: Prices aren't advertised at Ted's. They like to give you the impression that you can haggle.)

Price for the K20D* at Rainer's Camera house was $1550. This is there book price - what Rainer himself sets independently (I assume from this each Camera House franchise gets more control over their stock.) To contrast, the cataloge price is $1999.

All prices are in Aussie dollars, of course .

(And it's "Brizben" dammit, Yanks.)

*Edited, to correct "K200D" to "K20D."

Are you thinking of upgrading? The extra cost/features balance for me means I won't be. If the price goes down I may reconsider. But I think that the quality achievable with the K100D Super is not the limiting factor at the moment - it's my skill & artistic level that needs improving the most. And you can't buy that.

Those are crazy prices!

It would be cheaper to fly to Melb and pick one up here.

Garricks in Cairns is $1999 for the K20D, with the Pentax kit lens, I didn't ask for price for body only.

That is RRP. No one should pay that much for 20D + kit lens, give that many places sell 20d body for less than $1,600 inc GST.

Would buying from B&H incl customs import duty be more favourable?

I roughly calculated that it would cost about $1650 to get it from B&H, so better than crap shops trying to sell at RRP, but worse than street prices.

Then you can't go wrong - especially if one goes for buying the K20D accessories as well - battery grip, extra battery, etc.

Does the K20D use the same battery, remote shutter release cable, IR remote as the K10D?

Yes. For the work I do, I'd love to get a pentaprism viewfinder back.

I'm hoping to get into QCA's Photographer course, and so I'll need to get all the MP I can. Plus, the ultrasonic focusing with the 16-50mm lenses'd be great. And a vertical grip'd rock. And still, it'd be great to boot test it against ******s with single-digit Eoses.

And, on another note, does anyone have any idea on the import laws in Australia, with regards to buying stuff overseas?

The Australian Customs website is a good guide for comprehensive information:
When buying over the internet

Camera gear should have no problems getting in, since it's not illegal or restricted or anything. What you should be most aware of are the rules on duties and taxes. Generally if you import anything worth less than A$1000, you're fine; although I think one of the forum members had something about A$900 charged. However, if you buy something over A$1000, say a K20D, then you will have to pay Customs Duty and GST on the whole value of the product, not just the value over $1000.
