I can't find a reason why I'd prefer this option to whats already out there as a UWA option.

A UWA typically is used for large DOF and sharpness, so the f2 is not necessary.
This 16mm is not that wide, I run into FOV limitations even with the DA15ltd. (can't move back anymore unless I phase thru walls or can fly )

Some may need it for unique low light+confined space+tripod not-allowed venues/work.
I just don't see it happening too often for most general photography.
Even in palaces/churches/etc where a tripod may not be allowed, I'd still choose to use ISO400,800 + enough DOF and sharpness with a f4 or f5.8 and brace/rest on some bench/wall or something.

I think Samyang's main target market are the videographers..

I don't think so: if that were the case, they would probably offer their cinema lenses at a lower price, since there is nothing about them that makes them drastically more expensive. Also, most of their lenses are full-frame, and there aren't many full-frame cameras on the market for video. I wouldn't be surprised if they begin to offer autofocus versions of their lenses in the next few years...

Ah... I see.. Oh well, was just guessing.

But i hope they do not offer autofocus versions; those can be catered by Sigma.. LoL!

Maybe but costs would get higher, not because of the mechanics but because of licensing.

Actually the advise should be for lots of photographers to sell the DA 15 cheaply on PF and buy the Samyang. But of course the DA15 is next on my list (maybe the only lens on my list) of lenses to buy.
Copy that!

Definitely. But I think they'd be in a better position to charge higher prices, because they've established themselves as a maker of quality products. they have a great track record, at this point.

I agree. Samyang just wouldn't be that almost too good to be true deal it is now.
II suspect though they'd produce either AF or MF but not both.

I am about to buy this lens or am vacillating back and forth. I need a lens at this size for video. It needs to be excellent optically. AF doesnt matter to me much. I am moving out of the country in just over a week so if I buy this it must be today in order for it to get to me in time...

aaand while I was writing this I read the review for it and I just bought it!!! Thankfully amazon delivers to me right away

This will be perfect addition to my line up and the lens that will now be used for just about all my video! I cannot wait for it to get here. Pictures and videos will be up soon.

We'd be happy to see what you can do with this lens. Thank you.

It sounds like a good alternative to the Samyang 14mm lol - not as awkwardly wide, slightly faster and smaller. And allows use of filters. Hopefully the focusing ring and distance scales will be accurate. It will probably be good for street, architecture and astrophotography
Nom Nom Nom.

This week has been a film week with the 14 Samyang. A 16 with a CP filter would have rocked a few times.

My experience of fast lenses is that they really shine stopped down. The limit is Rayleigh's Criterion and it's all about aperture.

I got the lens last night and while I was running errands today I stopped at a park to test it out for the first time. I had to upload it to youtube from my ipad so the compression even @ 720p is no where near as clear as the original but more 1080p videos uploaded from my macbook pro will be coming soon.

I installed a tiffen circular polarizer right away.

Here is my first video

Video looks good. Rich, vibrant colours (I assume the polarizer helps here), lots of detail, pretty good DoF control, reasonably wide. How is its build quality?

It seems as solid or more so than my rokinon 85mm. I really like it, sure it's big and a bit heavy. So much so that my knock off glidecam stabilizer won't work without an additional quick release plate to dial it in. Good thing I got a cheap hand stabilizer, just need to get used to it. I haven't really taken any pictures with is yet but in a week ill be on my trip and this lens will get a lot of use.

So far I love it!
