I think its bogus. There is inconsistent data in the battery usage and if they are looking to ruin their line up by making 2 identical models this will do it. A product range needs differentiation. And it better not be a k-30 replacement as its identical. End of story.
maybe the k50 gets moved to entry level, k5 ii replacement moves to mid level, and a higher spec pro apsc cam is introduced? too much info we don't have to be able to judge correctly. How does 699 euros compare to other entry level cameras with a kit lens (list prices, not street prices)?

Possible, and I too had this thought. However the K-30 is currently $499 at B&H (and probably more elsewhere) but in order to become the entry level offering it would need to premiere at a price similar the K-30 other wise people will just buy the K-30 (new or 2nd hand). Also you need to consider that a new camera line has extra costs involved in initialising production and design, adding to the need to make more profit initially. All things considered, if Pentax wanted these specs at entry level, they would just drop the price of the K-30 and slot a newer camera in above it.

So, how does Pentax come up with their numbering scheme? It goes from 30 -> 50. No rhyme or reason really. (or is there?)

At this point I have to think that, back around 2010, someone at Pentax accidentally placed an order for Sony 16MP sensors with an extra zero on the quantity. Ha ha, oops!
I agree, their complete APS-C line up consists of this sensor alone.

Pentax needs to market a 3D video camera, with double APS-C 16 mp sony sensors and double K-mounts. That will help them get rid of their excess stock of those sensors maybe. And will have a positive impact on their lens sales. LOL!

That was intended as a joke, but I'm afraid I would buy it too.

Alternatively, they could use 4 of those APS-C 16mp Sony sensors in the 645DII. Four of those will have a surface area of 1479mm˛, a tiny bit larger then the sensor that they used in the original 645D. (1452mm˛) Using some dedicated hardware to stitch the four images together instantly after each shot.

Omg, when my ridiculous ideas are beginning to sound better then what Pentax is actually doing, then you know things are bad.

I never liked the design of the K-30 - too much of a mish-mash of textures and angles. To my eye, this design is prettier, which may help to sell it (one can hope).

It is a good entry-mid level dslr. The k-30 still compares very favorably to the canikon troops, in that it offers something different (WR) while just about matching them in other features. Judging from the specs, The k-50 is a slight update to the k-30 at similar price point. It is another winner. Styling may not be to everyone's taste, but I think it looks better and not at all like the canikons dslrs, it still has "character" and for a good reason, cause it seems designed to be more comfortable to hold.

That said, I'm still waiting for something as light as the k-x. That camera is a classic.

I agree, the K-30 design was not harmonic. It was more original, of course, but I bet they've found out that a large number of especially female buyers were put off by the design. I think it looked a little bit like they've left the styling to one of those car tuners which will take a normal cheap car and turn it into something that most grown up people would be embarrassed to drive to the mall.

The K-50 doesn't look quite as stylish as the K-x, but I disagree that it looks like a Canon. It's larger than the 100D (sits between the 100D and the 700D in size) and heavier than even the 700D, but IMHO it has more harmonic looks than both of them. And of course it's much more rugged.
