Pentax did use touchscreen Optio T line of cameras e.g. Pentax Optio T20: Digital Photography Review

Seems it didn't work for them (maybe they implemented it badly, dunno). It's true cams with touchscreen from that era were mostly duds.
I remember I tried a Samsung a Photokina years ago (K10D lunch era) and it really was a PITA to use.

That may be true most of the time...but obviously some people do move up. If they didn't, how do you explain this website or the countless others? And do you think most of the people that frequent these sites started out on a $6000 D4 with a $2000 24-70f2.8 ? I suspect most enthusiasts started out with the cheapest SLR/DSLR they could afford.
Most started out with cheapest will ended going back to P&S. I suspect those who choose mid-tier like D90 or 60D will eventually upgrade to better camera, hot-shoe flash and more variety of lens.

Are you basing that on observations, stats or just a gut feeling? Not saying you are right or wrong just wondering if it is indeed a fact.

This is a comparison between the K-50, K-30 and K-r.
They are shown with the same width (in pixels).

The lens of the K-50 on this photo is quite big compared to the other two. So, there are two possibilities, the lens is bigger or the body is smaller.

All lenses shown here have a filter diameter of 52mm.
The DAL 1:3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL on the K-r and K-30 has a diameter of 67.5mm.
A regular DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL WR lens is also 67.5mm.
If the new lens on the K-50 has also this size the K-50 body width is about 110..115 mm, which is quite small.

Nope. The K-50 photo is with DA 18-135mm, which has filter diameter for 62mm.

That might be the most interesting post in the entire thread.
k-5 = 130mm
k-30 = 130mm
k-r = 125mm
k-x = 122mm

If the lens is 62 and not 67.5mm the body is even smaller, about 100mm. That's too small.

Edit 1: sorry, that's the filter.
If you enlarge the K-50 image it seems to show a filter of 52, but it is difficult to read.

Edit 2: It indeed seems to be a DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL.
This lens has a diameter of 76mm, the body then would be about 125mm, which is the same size as the K-30 (128,5).

Why the new K-50 and K-500 sub-forums?

K-50 I can understand, but K-500? Did I miss something? What does Adam know?

Well,maybe two K500's make up a K1000D!

We can only hope for the FF option, eventually!

Where do you see a K-500 sub-forum?
Edit: on https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/

New K-5 as a replacement for the K5-II
K-50 as a replacement for the K-30 (same specs)
K-500 as a replacement for the X5 (fixed zoom lens) ...

Nope: 'the intro-level Pentax K-500 DSLR' is how it is described. Not a bridge camera.

Well, there was a photorumors story back in March that said 5 DSLR's, ranging from very cheap to very expensive. Maybe the K-500 is the bottom of that pile:

"Pentax is rumored to announce several new DSLR cameras (as early as this month, as many as 5 new DSLRs) which will be priced between $400 and $2000. I am not sure if one of those will be the long awaited full frame camera, but the $2000 price tag is just too high for an APS-C based camera (the full frame Nikon D600 costs exactly $2000). In addition, Pentax will introduce also a new compact APS-C based camera similar to the new Nikon Coolpix A which will be priced at around $700 ($400 cheaper than the Coolpix A). Maybe this will be the Ricoh GR Digital V camera that is rumored to have an APS-C sensor?"

Why would a K-5000 be a bridge camera? The K designation has always been for SLRs.

I am already confused by Pentax naming convention, I think maybe they just pull names out of a hat. Adding a 'K' camera without a K-mount would complete my confusion. Maybe k-5000 is replacement for k-01. (Not that it is real since I think it was just invented in this thread back a few posts)
