How about an APS-C sensor in the new Q the size of the Sony NEX-3N ?
That doesn't make sense as it would render the lenses and probably even the small mount useless.

Well, I'm surprised. I thought they would introduce a higher-end model, but there's no way they can sell the Q10 alongside the Q7. Perhaps this explains why the Q10 was designed a bit bigger than the original Q - to accommodate the larger sensor.

Looking at the two pictures, would it be feasible for Pentax to collect the unsold stock and just screw in a new sensor?

Not economically feasible. The Q10 would just drop in price.

You're probably right. Still, it must be the easiest kind of model change for Pentax.

I don't even need a Q10, but if the price drops much, I might get the double zoom kit just for the lenses.

Yeah, I was hoping for a 28mm equivalent PRIME lens at something faster than F/2.8. Maybe this new version of the 01 Prime would be something to consider.

I think what's new about the 01 Prime is just that is will be available in colour variations. Of course, the new sensor will give it a wider field of view. They are also going to start selling a flower-type hood for the 02 Zoom, presumably to match the new FOV.

I see the use of the MX-1 sensor as a good thing for adapted K lenses.
When I use my Bigma with the Q I notice details are smeared due to diffraction, since the lens starts at f6.3 at the long end and improves as you move to f8-f11.
With a larger sensor at the same MP count, the pixel density should theoretically allow a higher diffraction threshold.
I'm hopeful that adapted lenses that were previously so-so on the Q will now give improved results on the Q7.

Point and shoot sensors in a system camera don't sell regardless. For nearly the same $ one can get an APS-C or m43 or 1" sensor.

1" sensor is very soon going to be the minimum size for any enthusiast compact (RX100) or system camera (Nikon 1 series if it wasn't so goofy looking) and every size below that is going to be chewed up smartphones or el-cheapo cameras.

Wal-Mart had the original J1 with 10-30mm kit lens on sale for C$180 locally. How does the Q compete with that?

It doesn't.

About the only other market space left for P&S sensor sizes is rugged or specialist small cams, but their niche is going to be relatively small and well under the $250/unit price range soon, if that. I suspect that small sensor, "go anywhere" rugged cameras will be under the $150 market space within 3 years. They will be the closest thing to a digital disposable camera as there is, for buyers who want to go places where a smartphone is a bad idea: risky travel, Paris sewers, inside a volcano, Sea World.

Largely agree. I will say that changing the sensor in the Q from 1/2.3" to 1/1.7" is a Good Thing but it still makes me wonder how the result is meaningfully differentiated from the MX-1. Sure, you have a camera with interchangeable lenses, etc., but the market for a 1/1.7" ILC still seems pretty small compared to the vast world of high end P&S zoom cameras. Maybe that's OK for Pentax as they might think that a specialized but limited appeal offering is all they are really after anyway.

edit: I continue to think Pentax could take a real run at Nikon in the 1" sensor arena AND it would help their overall market presence.

I find it interesting that folks are making recommendations on how to market the Q vs. other sized sensors. Recall that the Q has done incredibly well in the Home Market and in Asia generally. Seems in this case, unlike the K-01, Pentax actually has a solid hit on its hands. I'm glad that they are maintaining the form factor and the lens compatibility in the future models.

I like the Yellow and Black model

Looks like it has the pop-up flash and it has the front dial, pretty much looks like a Q10 to my eye.

I recall nothing of the sort.

At most the Q had 5.8% of the Japanese mirrorless market share and that having been around almost a year longer than other systems which trounced it in sales.

That is measly. All other brands combined beat Pentax down into last place mirrorless systems cameras.
