Pentax K-500

Digital Camera Info is relaying the impending announcement of Pentax K-500:

?????????K-500??????? - ????info

They say it will be announced outside Japan but its announcement in Japan has not been confirmed yet.

No specifications are available at this stage but, given its name, one can easily assume this is an entry-level DSLR.

This rumour is most certainly true since there is already a K-500 section on this very forum

There's already a thread on this in the new K-500 section here on the forum.

Yep, there is definitely a thread on K-500 in the new K-500 section, wondering about the meaning of it, but no report on the Digital Camera Info rumour there.

Thanks for posting the link to the Google translation. I should have done it even though I don't think it will teach you more than what I wrote here above.

Pentax seems to be on a roll. I'm anxious to see what's to come next.

Good point; a 24mp K-5 III could be in the works too. That would make for a very coherent line-up indeed. Too bad they didn't name the Q7 Q5 instead

Could be also that K-5 II and K-5 IIs will last another year until Photokina 2014 and the announcement of "something completely different".

I'm sure Pentax will not wait that long...

Both K-50 and K-500 have already been added to the K-mount DSLR list:
Pentax K-mount DSLRs - Pentax Pentax Digital Cameras - Pentax Camera Reviews and Specifications

(Edit: No details, no product images at this point. Just placeholders.)

I am hoping K-500 will have the same sensor/viewfinder as K-5 and K-50 (16MP and 100% coverage w/ pentaprism) with other things scaled down, like no weather sealing, single control wheel, lighter, and perhaps smaller.

If so, well................ (gone to grab my credit card).

Then Pentax would have created the very awkward situation where each an every APS-C DSLR in their line up, from low tier to flagship, has the same sensor and thus, almost the same IQ. Then why would a photography enthusiast want to upgrade from lower tier to a higher one? Or, why would a photography enthusiast choose a higher tier body at all? The reason such people invest in equipment is mostly the pictures that the equipment produces, if they all produce the same quality pictures.

Why would I invest in a brands giant all terrain vehicle, or in their slick sports car, when their cheapest soccer-mom-car has the exact same engine?

Because a mini-van just can't go where an ATV can -- even if it has the same engine. Camera wise, the high end models offer a lot more functionality and features -- image quality aside, which is kind of redundant considering Nikon, Sony, and Pentax all use Sony sensors.

...
It's the same situation with other brands, like Nikon : the 3 APS-C DSLR of the line-up (D7100, D5200, D3200) have a CMOS with 24 Mp.
The differences are in the functionnalities and in the body (they are quite different).

And for Pentax-Ricoh, don't forget the GR (with the same 16 Mp without AA filter than the K-5 IIs).

Also, all APS-C Canons have variations of the same 18MP sensor...

Makes me wonder when sensors are going to become like processors. Like when Apple abandoned Motorola and IBM for x86. Sensors have gotten very very good, and I can see a point where they all coalesce around a dedicated manufacturer rather than bother with reinventing the wheel every generation. Is Canon really going to keep designing their own? Especially when their current models are clearly inferior?
