I actually just ordered a white Q7 with a black grip. The "standard" configurations are listed as "available for pre-order" while the custom colors are listed as "Usually ships in 2-4 weeks".

I did an online chat with one of B&H's reps and he said that if these are listed as shipping in 2-4 weeks then that is what B&H expects. So I decided to order one and see if it ships earlier than September.

Has anyone heard if the custom color combos will be available earlier than the standard kits?
Interesting approach. Please keep us posted. That may be a nice way to speed the process for folks who really want a Q7.

But I think the possibility of selling at $ 60 less without kit would have been even better for lower futher the initial price.
In fact, a kit with a DA L 18-55 is often cheaper than a body alone.

It was like that with both the K-x cameras I bought,
back in the previous decade,
and it was like that recently for the K-30.

The K-M was a great deal with a kit including the lens and a flash.

I got the K-X kit because it came with a "red" lens to match the "red" body. I think the color was more like "day-glo salmon" than red but, as my wife points out, my color appreciation is limited to the eight found in the smallest Crayola pack.

And yes, I know I'm a photo wuss because I didn't insist on a bad to the bone black body. I can live with that ...

I'll update as I learn more.

The Pentax website is quoting 4-6 weeks to ship the custom colors...so I suspect that is more accurate.

Effect of the earthquake on release schedules

At first I was surprised to see these cameras were updated so soon. I did a little experiment, illustrated with my high-tech graphics below. A hyphen is a month, K or Q is the release of a camera and E is the March 11, 2011 earthquake. Of course the Thai floods also affected a of camera manufacturers and they happened just after the earthquake.

K-50 - June 12, 2013
K-30 - May 21, 2012
K-R - Sep 9, 2010
K-X - Sep 17, 2009
K-M - Sep 22, 2008

K-----------K-----------K-----E-------------K------------K

Q7 - Jun 12, 2013
Q10 - Sep 10, 2012
Q - Jun 23, 2011

Q-----E--------Q--------Q

So my conclusion is that both the K-30 and Q10 were delayed by the earthquake and that is why the K-50 and Q7 seem to be ahead of schedule. The interesting thing is that when you apply the same analysis to the higher end K-mount bodies, they are on a longer schedule, but the same pattern can be observed. I think this bodes well for anyone hoping for a K-5 II successor soon.

K10D - Sep 13, 2006
K20D - Jan 23, 2008
K-7 - May 20, 2009
K-5 - Sep 20, 2010
K-5 II - Sep 10, 2012

K---------------K---------------K---------------K-----E-----------------K---------

Does this make sense?

What you have written is true of the entire global economy and is reflected in the recent performance of the US equity market. "Just-in-time" manufacturing supply chains are wonderful productivity enhancers right up to the point that the chain breaks . . . . . . and one small part can interrupt, for instance, production of an entire automobile (radiator hoses lost 2/3 of global capacity, Ford Focus fuse box part unavailability caused global production shutfdown) So auto manufacturers took their scheduled summer hiatus for retooling in April and May rather than August and September, then couldn't restart because the global economy had cooled so much.

Were it not for Bernanke and QEII . . . . .

LOL.

Don't give the Japanese engineers any ideas about Ikea.

I don't want a camera I have to assemble myself, and then have to go back to the store and beg for the pieces that were missing from the box. Or ask for new parts to replace ones that don't fit because they drilled the holes in the wrong places. Or try to return items that aren't compatible with other products in the same line because they changed the design without changing the name or model number.

(Um, can you tell I've had some problems with Ikea?)

JC, thanks for following us here and reading, even if it can be painful at times. There are plenty of us here who appreciate it.

I personally am not in the market for the 50/500-level models, but they look solid, and I'm looking forward to great things in the future.

Later this year, right?

Best line from Generation X (the novel):

Ikea = semi-disposable Swedish furniture.
