In St. Louis people are actually begging IKEA to come here. They're offering tax breaks (TIF) and additional incentives and sweet deals on prime real estate and STILL IKEA is holding out for a better deal - AND POLITICIANS ARE STILL TALKING TO THEM!

I don't understand.

But they make a sweet cardboard digital camera

I've eaten Swedish Meaballs forever. It is a cocktail party hors d'ourves staple here. And vichyssoise with leeks and pepper.

But I buy North Carolina furniture.

At first I was surprised to see these cameras were updated so soon. I did a little experiment, illustrated with my high-tech graphics below. A hyphen is a month, K or Q is the release of a camera and E is the March 11, 2011 earthquake. Of course the Thai floods also affected a of camera manufacturers and they happened just after the earthquake.

K-50 - June 12, 2013
K-30 - May 21, 2012
K-R - Sep 9, 2010
K-X - Sep 17, 2009
K-M - Sep 22, 2008

K-----------K-----------K-----E-------------K------------K

Q7 - Jun 12, 2013
Q10 - Sep 10, 2012
Q - Jun 23, 2011

Q-----E--------Q--------Q

So my conclusion is that both the K-30 and Q10 were delayed by the earthquake and that is why the K-50 and Q7 seem to be ahead of schedule. The interesting thing is that when you apply the same analysis to the higher end K-mount bodies, they are on a longer schedule, but the same pattern can be observed. I think this bodes well for anyone hoping for a K-5 II successor soon.

K10D - Sep 13, 2006
K20D - Jan 23, 2008
K-7 - May 20, 2009
K-5 - Sep 20, 2010
K-5 II - Sep 10, 2012

K---------------K---------------K---------------K-----E-----------------K---------

Does this make sense?
What would explain the K-30 and the K-50 being essentially the same camera in a different body?

The K-500. It may not have been practical to produce an unsealed variant of the K-30 (i.e. a K-300) so they designed a new body that could do be used for both. Or maybe it was just the car manufacturers strategy of doing minor refreshes to keep a product in the public's eye. I would think they got much more attention by releasing the K-5-/K-500 in a new body with the same internals than if they had released a K-300 that was just a K-30 with fewer (or less capable) seals.

There is an interesting thought.

Still thinking they could have added a few 'smaller' features to the K-50 to really distinguish itself from the K-30... maybe a microphone input, +1fps burst, something..

Metz still doesn't have support for several of their flashes for the K-30 This is REALLY going to mess with their scheduling..
...or not.. maybe they really aren't planning on releasing the firmware upgrades to support K-30. If they do support K-50 instead, I will be frowny.

Are there compatibility problems with K30 and Metz flashes ?

I thought Metz just release some firmware updates to Metz flashes for K30 and K5II? The discussion is here

You could say the same about the K-X/K-R,the Q/Q10, to some extent the K20D/K-7 and any number of "updated" models from other camera companies too. I saw models of all the K-50 body colours today. They look nicer than the K-30. The design is simpler, less fussy.

Actually, I was only trying to show that these cameras are coming out on a fairly consistent and rational schedule and we can expect a K-5 II replacement soon. I'd be worried if that one was just a rehash, but I think there will be some big changes inside. I think I just have more faith in Pentax than most people around here.

By the way, where did Bernanke and IKEA come from? I really can't follow some people's train of thought!

oh yes.

Well.. actually.. I'm glad you asked. As I see now they FINALLY released a new firmware for the K-30 or K-5II two days ago.

you're welcome: that's surprising though, I thought Metz would be more reactive....
