To all:

"What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet"

As photographers we develop an emotional attachment to our equipment, but let that not be the deciding factor when choosing the best gear for our pursuits. Would your art not be as good using [brand name] equipment? Would it be less appealing? Would the content be different?

When my parents moved after living in that house for 13 years, I clarified the distinction for them to help with the emotional sense loss: "You're changing your house not your home."

Yes, but did you know who owns it? About Motec
Adam is known as 'Mo'? I did not know that!

And (since corporation names matter, apparently), all those years I thought I was a Pentaxian I was actually an Asahian or a Hoyan.

So many revelations, twists and turns - we must be coming up on the end-of-season cliff-hanger!

Depending on the era, you may also have been a Honeywellian.

As a long time Ricoh and Pentax lover, it doesn't bother me if the name Ricoh will go on the front of the camera and Pentax stops existing... as long the spirit of Pentax never dies though.

However... new name, new camera, new mount... when that happens (if it happens), then maybe that will be my cue to move on to something else... it will be a sad day when/if Pentax will cease to exist.

Perhaps Ricohnians..?

What are we then; we who haven't bought any equipment yet from this company, but most likely will do so? Will we perhaps be Ricohnians..?

Soon you may need to change the forum name from Pentax forums to RICOH Forums.

The Marketing Division in the USA will change its name to:
Bottom of Pentax K10D shows "Pentax Digital Camera" and "Pentax Corporation"

Bottom of Pentax K7 shows "Pentax Digital Camera" and "Hoya Corporation"

Bottom of K5II shows "Pentax Digital Camera" and "Pentax Ricoh Imaging Co., Ltd."

Bottom of next Pentax dSLR will show "Pentax Digital Camera" and "Ricoh Imaging Company, Ltd."

Ricoh maintains brands that have "brand currency," i.e. marketing value as a name.

Pentax is committed to Q, K-mount and 645.

End of discussion.
They probably save 2 cents by not printing the word Pentax on the camera bottom....

anyhow... indeed a sad day in the PENTAX history. My last PENTAX purchase is a K5IIs.... and has been holding off purchase since then.
Would like to see the direction of Ricoh is taking before buying more stuff.... I guess we will see if PENTAX name will continue to exist in the next "flagship" camera announcement, and until then, I'm holding off any lens purchase.

The same thing happened when United Airlines merged with Continental. The only thing that remained of United was the name because it had more worldwide name recognition. Unfortunately, the merged company is pretty much just Continental by another name. That is a major reason I, along with a huge number of their other frequent flyers, have jumped ship. We just hate the "Continental way" of doing things - including screwing the frequent customers.

The same sort of calculus will have to happen with Pentax-Ricoh becoming simply Ricoh. Ricoh has far more resources and could grow the Pentax brand. Pentax cameras have always been the more recognizable and "popular" between the two. The press release seems to say this is just a corporate thing, consolidating under one name but that Pentax cameras will still be Pentax. Lots of corporations have many brands. After all, (warning, America-specific reference ahead) we still buy Post Toasties cereal, not General Foods Toasties and Chevrolet Impalas, not General Motors Impalas. We will just be buying Pentax cameras by Ricoh. I can live with that. I'll stay a Pentax shooter as long as Pentax cameras continue offering so much more value per dollar of cost than the 'major" brands. If the primary Ricoh DSLR stops being Pentax, however, I will have to rethink the whole thing. I like being a contrary, iconoclastic Pentax shooter.
Continental isn't the problem. I'm a Skycap for Delta & American and have worked for UA, America West, Continental and Northwest. UA got rid of curbside check-in almost 7 years ago and had lines that were so big, passengers weren't making their flights eventhough they were there hours ahead of time. Continental had to get rid of us because UA said to.

UA has agents who start at 0330 and the gridlock continues.

Everyone please relax. .

This is merely a continuation of the corporate restructuring begun calendar 3Q2012 and slated for completion calendar 4q2014. This merely eliminates the messy pre-Pentax camera division structure and facilitates global earnings consolidation.

Or don't relax, if you prefer. Continue to espouse conspiracy theories and find new reasons to predict the EOTWAWKI. Like the Sandwich Board Bearded Man in The New Yorker cartoons.

Believe me, skycaps or lack of skycaps is NOT the problem for those of us who fly over 100,000 miles per year. Not even a minor one. In 25 years, I have never used curb-side check-in. I and my fellows check in on-line and only take carry-on bags. Skycaps are irrelevant for the very frequent flyer.

Oh, and no matter what you have been told, United isn't telling CO to do anything. Virtually the entire management team for the merged airline came over from CO. UA management was mostly retired off. The new airline is simply COdbaUA.

At any rate, this is OT. I shouldn't have started it and don't think we should continue it here.

As long as the cameras take my K mount lenses and continually improve I'll be fine with it. Though the name Ricohian sounds weird...

I tend to work on evidence rather than assumption. Where does this 'they are going to get rid of the k mount' come from. My last two film SLRs were Ricohs and they both used the k mount so I think Ricoh are as wedded to it as Pentax were. I also have no problem using a Ricoh DSLR with my history but until it is announced or there are strong sourced rumours, I don't see that happening either.
