K-50 on front cover of popular photography

Walked through the magazine rack at the grocery store today and there it was: big, bold and RED!

"Tough all-weather 16.3MP DSLR with a shocking low price"

I cannot ever remember seeing a Pentax camera on a magazine front cover all by itself! Ok, to be fair there is a PEN E-P5 down in the corner but who even sees that when you are visually verloaded with RED Pentax!

This is nice to see, especially considering Canon regularly gets whatever [X]ti model they're hocking at the moment on the cover.

That's great! It's a good magazine... I'll buy a copy, so as to encourage them to do more Pentax covers. Like that Q with all the color choices... photogenic!

They seem to like it and give it a pretty solid review, it looks great in the article too. A few niggles like slightly less resolution at ISO 100 than D5200, ok tracking and ISO scores badly past 800 or so because the RAW files dont get smoothed which I guess other companies do, but they mention you can reduce the noise easily up to 3200 in post. They love the general IQ, handling, and features

The Q7 is also mentioned in the front of the mag. They also even recommend the Auto-Tak 35mm f2.3 in another article about a featured photog who uses old russian primes. The orig Q and the Ricoh GR get Best Buy recos.

Seems to be a pretty positive issue for Pentax err Ricoh, and indeed I wager they will compare future competitors against a lot of the K-50s standout features.

Pretty positive review overall. Some issues with AF mentioned. Pop Photo actually does some good testing IMHO, but then usually waters it down with the ultimate analysis--rarely will they say "this is the best camera in its class", for example. Yes, I know why that is. But it's good to see them come out with (again, IMHO) a fair review on a camera whose company hasn't advertised with them for years. Last Pentax ad I can remember was around the time I first started subscribing in '09 or so.

Pop Photo's K-5 review was one of the (many) things that got me into Pentax. It was reviewed in the winter during a major snow storm in NYC and the weather sealing and ergonomics were big things for me. Could only afford a used K-7, but I'm working my way up to the present, lol.

I think it was backpacker magazine named the K30 the outdoor DSLR of 2013. It wasn't on the cover, but it shot the cover!

That review and a nice costco sale sold me on the K30.

Value for money is the news, and that probably sells more in the current circumstances than gee-whizzery.
