China really seem to be moving when it comes to the latest from Pentax and electronics

Here are some more DA1770 sample photos from my fellow Chinese friends (all wide open shots in JPG from K20D):

Crop of the above one:

Crop of the above one:

Comments by those who tried it:
1. AF is silent (SDM) and fast (on par of the DA1645)
2. Pretty sharp wide open, enough for K20D's 14.6mp sensor
3. Almost no visiable CF or PF (or whatever you call it)
4. The lens extends quite long at 70mm end, longer than DA1645 at 16mm end
5. Built quality is about the same as DA1645
6. All in all a very nice walkabout and travel lens.

One more note: the lens might not work well on old non-SDM-support bodies. It won't AF on K100D or Ds, AF only works on K100D Super, K10D, K20D and K200D. That's a big minus for many potential buyers I guess.

I have been waiting for this lens to be released as a possible alternative to the DA* but now I see several people who I know have the DA* expressing an interest in the 17-70. lol

So I guess my question is "why"? Other than LBA why might you want/need both? Since I am trying to decide between them what about the DA* might make you want this one as well? Is it just because this one will be smaller/lighter?

The 1770 is smaller and lighter, reaches longer. That's why some guys want it even after they already got the DA*1650 And it's LBA, no cure for that as far as I know ...

Like frank said. But I also think after the frenzy over the DA*, the DA17-70 is definitely easier on the wallet for those with full blown LBA. The wider focal range is definitely a big plus and maybe the allure of f/2.8 isn't all that it's made out to be. With SR, a f/4 lens is definitely handholdable going by the restaurant pictures.

Would make extra sense now that it is only usabla in sealed bodies (K100D probably a bridg camera)

Heard it has some sealing to keep dust away, but probably not water ...

Hmm, as it is more common to get dust in the lens than water, maybe dustfree is also weatherproof ....

Bummer!

I was one of those potential buyers, but I guess I waited in vain... Why am I even staying with Pentax really? They won't deliver me a substitute for the ist D and now this.

I guess you could always use it manually but with this short a throwing distance (how do you call that?) that will be a hit and miss...

Och well, I guess I can always spend my money on Sigma's 17-70. Seems to be very good as well.

Boy, I can tell ya: my day started very bad...

That was meant sarcastically:
I can put it in another way, my money won't go to Pentax... Tamron 17-50 and Sigma 17-70 are both to believed very good performers too.
