Same here (*istDS). Good news: money will go towards DA 55-300.

Assuming DA 17-70 will be SDM only (that red "SDM" on the name plate just did not look like "screwdrive AF as well") I got DA 18-55 II last weekend and I am VERY pleased so far! It is much sharper at 18mm, CA and vignetting still there but very easy to fix in the Lightroom.

I played with one today where a rep was showing various things. the rep said it was weather sealed... it was the first sdm I've used though so I was impressed with that alone. anyway, he mentioned a price of around 600, but that the official release was expected in a couple weeks.

I can only assume that $600 is the MSRP?

yeah, 600 is a bit steep. but then the sigma is around 400... sdm and weather seals for 200? 100 would be a sure thing, but 200 is a little too much. guess I'll make up my mind after seeing what happens to the street price.

The sample pics sealed it for me, I will probably be looking to sell my tamron when it comes out.

I second that one. I finally decided on the K100D a few months ago over Canikon in part because according to the lens roadmap they were coming out with a 17-70mm f/4 lens (also because the K100D was only $370 at the time ). I knew a relatively fast 24-105 eqv. lens would take care of about 95% of the things I shoot. I can't tell you how bummed I am now knowing I'll have to upgrade bodies if I want get it. Especially since Pentax prides itself on backwards compatibility. It's enough to make me want to sell my whole kit I've already built up and buy a D90 and the new Nikkor 16-85 they just came out with.

Your k100d is backward compatible. you're talking forwards compatibility. Its like being upset an old MF body can't use AF.

Well, it's not quite the same thing as AF/MF since they clearly can make lenses with both screw drives and SDM. They simply chose not to on this lens.

I am a bit surprised to find that the 17-70mm is both bigger and heavier than the 18-250mm lens.

17-70mm vs 18-250mm vs 16-50mm
Length: 93.5mm vs 85.5mm vs 98.5mm
Weight: 485g vs 455g vs 565g
Filter: 67mm vs 62mm vs 77mm

Everyone complains about the no screw AF but what if they added it and it cost a lot more? Would you be willing to pay the extra for that? It's already a big lens too.

Again any news on when this is coming out?
