It's real 17-70. The same like at PMA and PIE 2008 shown. SDM letters are red. DA*55/1.4 has the same red SDM.

So far the 16-45 is a great lens that they've tried to replace with the 16-50 which is completely hit or miss quality-wise not to mention the fact it's questionable whether it's IQ is as good as the 16-45 - Now this 17-70 must be as good as the 16-45 it replaces or it's a waste of time and money.
According to many who have both on another forum, and according to a test in UK amateur photographer, the DA* is the better lens of the two. Besides that, it has SDM and for many K10D/K20D/K200D shooters there is the not unimportant factor that it is a sealed lens.

My main question is, will the 17-70 be sealed???? It should be if we can believe the German K10D brochure according to which sealing has nothing to do with * ratings but that the Pentax SDM lenses were to be sealed. My personal gripe with the 16-50 is that it stops at 50...

I am really looking forward to this lens. If the image quality is as good as the DA16-45, then this lens will be high on my list of "must haves". This would be a perfect travel lens, IMO. I eagerly await it's introduction and also to see how well it performs.

What Lance said. I'll take it with or without sealing although I prefer the former.

I am also looking forward to this lense to replace my 20-35. Same constant aperture, but much greater range of focal lengths and SDM to boot.

It's definitely the real lens from a fellow Chinese forum member (I'm a regular over there too ). He does have resources to get some lenses earlier than most of us.

Pity he has only posted one small sample shot, not enough to see how the lens performs:

The FA 28-105 f3.2/4.5 was a favourite lens of mine with my MZ-S (plug - both for sale on eekbay ) and I'm looking forward to having it's equivalent on my digital body.

Whilst I really like my DA 16-45, it's reverse zoom action and lack of coverage above 45mm are annoying drawbacks. I really do hope that the IQ of the new lens is equal to that of the 16-45. The 1mm loss at the wide end I can live with, but any IQ loss I won't be happy about.

I'm sure that Pentax are aware that as an intented replacement for the 16-45 it will have to be very close, or they may decide that the 16-45 was/is too close to the 16-50 and may be happy to place the IQ level between the 18-55 and the 16-50, the possible ommision of ED glass may be the giveaway.

Let's wait and see, after all, as Pentaxians, we're used to the waiting game, aren't we?

Wait a minute Richard: isn't that already the case with the 16-45?

But I'm with you: any loss in IQ to the 16-45 would be a bone...

Please, maybe the 16-50/2.8 is the true 16-45 successor.....
Many posts and even a review state that the 16-50 outperforms the 16-45 except in the fields of size and weight....

With reference to another post of you and my reply (and the second time we agree on something) in another forum: Maybe those who say the 16-45 is the better do not want to upgrade, yet want to be able to justify that....

I haven't quite followed all the threads about the problems with the 16-50, but, having used the 16-50 of Wim, I'm quite confident to say that this lens outperforms the 16-45...

So, here you go Jan, we agree again!

I was quite happy with my 16-45 for the time I used it. It's a very nice walk around lens and a good performer (if by far not optically the best I had.) I would be quite pleased with this DA 17-70 if it performs as nicely as the 16-45 and has the screw drive AF. That last one is essential to me, because I only have screw drive AF and I'm not thinking in any way to 'upgrade' to a K series (been there, done that. )

Of course, if the 17-70 would be an SDM only lens, on an ist series you could always use it in MF, but I would not be all too happy with that, given the short throw distance (if I see correctly on the images.)

In conclusion: if anyone here on the forum would be kind enough to ask that guy if it has screw drive or not, I would be very graithfull! (that and any price tag of the beast.)
