Looks like a typical Pentax P&S.

Specs and controls seem quite basic. And it is available in any color you want, in a Henry Ford sort of way .....

Almost exactly like the Optio RZ10.

It just doesn't have the Pentax logo anymore, but the Ricoh logo. I thought they said "the name Pentax would always exist on the product level"? Did they mean the used market with that statement?

Clavius, please don't let the new Pentax HD DA Limited lenses and new Pentax FGZ II flashes keep you from complaining!

I thought Ricoh was taking over the compact system, while Pentax was the DSLR? Wasn't that the mission statement recently?

I think Pentax is going to mean SLR and larger sensor size, while Ricoh will be their compact lines.

Aside from the fact that this appears to fit with Ricoh's stated plans of product differentiation between Ricoh and Pentax brands, his comment seems fairly mild on the Clavius vitriol/sarcasm scale. Can you imagine what he might have said if the camera had a Pentax label?

I looked at the press release at a couple of sites and it seems like exactly the RZ18 but with a slightly different lens (15x 24-360 instead of 18x 25-450 in full frame format). Maybe with a different coating - I am just guessing because it does not say SMC on the lens. Also, the wide end has f3.3 on the Ricoh and f3.5 on the Pentax. The screen definition is much better on the RZ18 - 460k on the Pentax, 270k on the Ricoh (seriously? Sony has been putting 921k dot 3in screens on their point and shoots for years now!). Everything else seems similar between the RZ18 and HZ15, including the CCD sensor and the 720 HD movie recording quality (which is a limitation of the CCD sensor).

Since the RZ18s seem to be blown out at stores (I got mine at Frys last week for 69 bucks + tax) it would seem like the RZ18 is a much better deal, unless you absolutely have to have 24mm instead of 25mm, and f3.3 instead of f3.5 at the wide end.

If Ricoh wants to build a name in the lower end of the market I'd say they need a better camera than this re-vamped Pentax Optio.

Has this "one more again" and poor performing P&S anything to do with RICOH's ambitions to label it's "innovative product" no more under PENTAX but RICOH's brand ?
Even the small CASIO does much better with EX-ZR800 (CMOS sensor, full HD, RAW files, timelapse...)!
Sounds like one more depressive news ...

So the people upgrading from their compact Ricoh's are going to inevitably buy......?

They'll buy whatever. There is no particular link between the Ricoh line and Pentax SLRs, whether you are talking Q, APS-C, or 645D.

And Pentax is just a brand name owned by Ricoh at this point. Nothing more or less. I don't see any reason why they would ditch it, but I suppose they could. But who really cares if the k mount continues?
