No, DA* is DA*, not AW.
DA* is an older generation lenses that most likely will be replaced by DA AW.
As long as DA* lenses do not include "AW" in the name of the lens they are not AW, but they have the same pro specification as AW lenses.
Now I`m confused, the document below states that both DA* and WR are all weather but the DA*`s are water (and dust) resistant:

This text was probably composed long before they had any AW lens on K-mount.
If they wrote it today, they would probably not use "all weather" to describe WR.

DA* all weather highly resistant to water and dust
WR weather resistant. Can take quite a bit of rain, but maybe a tropical rainstorm will be a bit too much for it?

AW means drip-proof and dust-proof. WR means drip-proof only.

DA* are AW, see http://www.ricoh-imaging.fr/media/0b5eadca31fdda1572e60f6cc5093f8c/CATALOGUE_FR_resized.pdf (pages 28 and 29)

Yes.

And the English language version of that document explicitly lists the DA* lenses as "AW" too. See:
Pentax Lenses and Accessories (PDF)

(The "Properties" field of that PDF says "Created January 2013").

Edit: Whoops: I've just noticed that TenZ.NL referenced the same document above.

Pretty clear indeed:

"AW lenses provide maximum weather-resistant and dustproof performance preventing the intrusion of drizzle and dust into the lens barrel. WR lenses come with a simplified weather-resistant construction designed to repel a light splash of water."

DA* are all weather proof, but are not AW lens. The only AW lens for K-mount is HD DA 560/5.6 ED AW.
DA* also means drip- and dust-proof.

The AW symbol only tell that the lens is "all weather proof", not that the lens is of "AW type"..

Imho DA* protection is the same as AW protection. WR is for cheaper DA lenses. So DA* are AW it just doensn't say so because the * implies it. On DA a difference has to be made between wr en aw to signify the level of protection.

I suggest you read the documents identified above!

These documents talk of "all weather lenses", not "the all weather lens", and give a special symbol to all 7 of these lenses: the 6 DA* lenses and the 560mm. They say "AW lenses provide maximum weather-resistant and dustproof performance preventing the intrusion of drizzle and dust into the lens barrel."

And none of these 7 lenses is listed with the WR symbol. In effect, there is just one category that is higher than "WR", and that applies to those 7 lenses.

I have read it, and it's far from perfect. They talk of "all weather proof" lenses not AW series lenses. Pentax has 7 all weather proof K-mount lenses, and one of them is a AW series lens.

This is how they describe DA series and DA WR/AW series.
QuoteQuote:
Consisting of standard-class lenses, this series provides superb image quality and outstanding operability with a compact, lightweight body. The WR (Weather resistant) and AW (All Weather) series models belong to this group.
It's kind of funny that they call a 500mm long 3kg heavy $7000 lens for standard-class, compact and lighweigth. But they say that AW series lenses belong to this group.

This is how they describe DA* SDM series (yes they call it DA* SDM series)
QuoteQuote:
Consisting of super-high-performance, large aperture models, this series features a smooth, quiet AF mechanism driven by a supersonic drive motor (SDM) and excellent weather-resistant, dustproof performance.

If we don't get an announcement or some fresh rumors we're gonna be arguing about strap lugs pretty soon.

What confuses me the most is that the document states that the DA*`s are actually waterproof. This is a new one for me.

Same here, imho there is no difference. Especially when it`s written on the box.
Maybe they gave the AW designation to the 560 (a simplefied telescope design, not up to DA* standards) to emphasize that it`s not a regular DA consumerclass lens?

DA* always were AW but only on the box and littérature, not in the lens name.

They also use AW designation on 645 lenses that probably are of even higher grade than DA*.
