Neither company would ideally want to announce on the same day as each other. Although I've heard that the D610 is likely to piss off a lot of D600 owners - maybe Nikon wants to hide the release!

Well, the K-3 is likely just going to be a Pentax version of the Nikon D7100. So Nikon can't really care less about its announcement, they're marketing their third FF camera in just a few years time.

The 8th October date is not substantiated as far as I can see. In any case, I don't think the D610 is a very big improvement on the D600, from what I can glean from other fora.

There probably be some whining from the Nikon crowd when they release D610. It will also be interesting to see how Nikon will promote the update on D610.

Not really. D7100 is an old generation tech, way behind the K-3. D7100 is what some K5II+ would have been.
K-3 is more like the D400 / 7DMk2 — if those two ever come.

A K-mount full frame with DX ability so you can use the crop frame lenses is what's needed, with the Pentax magic getting the most out of the sensor like the K-5/K-5II did. I mean Sony can fit a FF sensor in the RX1, why can't Pentax fit one in the K-5 body?

Don't want all the fancy stuff, tilting screens and all that jazz. Don't even want a pop up flash (although getting the P-TTL to work on the next model would be crackin'.) This 40mp shift thing sounds like it could go wrong and sounds rather limited, I dunno.

Just want the ability to use fast full frame lenses the way they should be. My K-50 f1.2 would be tops on a full frame, much lower high ISO noise and wotnot. FA31 and FA77mm too.

Love low light work. Bored of APS-C. Willing to pay top dollar for a PK FF (like £2.5k). Also willing to drop the lot and go to another FF system, although I'd prefer to stay with Pentax because I find this lot make the nicest DSLR body. Just feels right.

Please Pentax.

Whether or not the D7100 is "old" tech, one would think that Nikon might take some notice of a competitor aimed squarely at one of their big-selling "prosumer" APS-C models, as opposed to another entry into the miniscule FF market, the main function of which, from Nikon's corporate perspective, is to provide advertising and cachet for the aforementioned prosumer bodies.
I think both Canon and Nikon have saturated their APS-C markets. The D7100 costs about the same as the D600. The only thing left for Canon and Nikon to do is cannibalize their market share by convincing all these people to "upgrade" to "fullframe." And consequently, their "fullframe" lenses. They never had a committed APS-C lens line anyway, so I expect them to neglect the format in search of fullframe profits.

Their 5th, actually. (D4, D800, D800E, D600, D610.)
