If this lens were released as WR with DC and constant f/2.8 and yet was not DA* then I think can assume the DA* line is dead.

For me, i dont need constant 2.8, but i would not be interested in one at a 5.6 like the 18-135.
WR + DC + 2.8-4 would be a real winner
My thoughts exactly! I already had my mind set on the Tamron 28-75, but I think I'll wait and see what this lens turns out to be. WR would be a real winner for me...

da 18-70 2.8 for videography

An DA 18-70 2.8 lens is going to be BIG and the IQ probably wont be any better than the 16-50 da*. So what is the point besides gaining an extra 20mm on the long end. If however this lens was ultra quiet and built to focus well with contrast detect autofocus it could be a nice piece for the video enthusiasts.

18-70 f2.8 wr would be like dream lens. Lets hope iq is very good to match that f2.8 and probably high price tag. I would like it to be inner focus and zoom lens without front element coming out. Ultrasound focus...i do not know if I want cos they easyly have problems than screw focus lenses.

Good question. Maybe this is a lens designed to work with the updated autofocus system of the new Pentax flagship to come out later this autumn.

In any case, I'm disappointed this is no longer a DA* 16-85 f4, as some of us hoped it would be. It would have been nice to have a top of the line zoom lens covering wide to short tele range that wasn't f2.8. I could do without the f2.8 price and weight.

Could be WR + DC motor based on the success of the 18-135. Who needs the * anyway?

You have to look at these lenses as kit lens options as well.
I think the question is how you sell it against the 18-135 if it is basically equivalent. I think the 18-135 is f4 to 70mm, isn't it? So a variable 18-80 zoom that is f2.8 to f4 would be the same, except with less range...

If it was sharp from F4 and smaller than the DA*16-50 F2.8, it would have found a place in my bag for daytime motorcycle photography. Alas, if it doesn't happen and if Pentax doesn't meet my individual needs (which I presume mirrors the broader population) then I have no alternative than to conclude that Pentax is doomed.

The cynic in me says it'll be the old DA 17-70mm f4, with hd coating, rounded aperture blades, a red ring, and it'll cost twice as much as the previous version. Any improvement beyond that is a bonus....

Do we know this 18-70 is going to be a 2.8?? If so wouldn't it likely follow that it will be expensive (another $1,500 lens?) if its better than the 16-50 2.8 which it would replace. Can't imagine Ricoh replacing the 16-50 with a better lens that cost less money... In any event, I'm very interested in this lens and only wish that it was coming out this Fall....

Could be more substantial upgrade than that, especially if it coincides with the release of a new AF technology in the new body. Might be that the new lense needs to work together with the new body to get the best results.

Errrr..... maybe the point is because you get an extra 20mm on the long end?

I think this is probably realistic. In fact we could see several Pentax lenses re-released as HD versions - would be awesome if they also added WR but that might take more of a redesign and change in manufacturing.
