If this lens is an 18-70 or 18-85 I guess I don't really understand it's place in the market.

It's not a F/2.8 at either of those ranges.
If it's a variable zoom it seems like there's not much differentiation from the 18-135 (unless it's a 2.8-4).

I'm going to stay optimistic that this is a 24-75 F/2.8.

For what it's worth I am betting 16-85 f/4

It could be. I guess it *could* be a 18-70 f/2.8, too, but I doubt that, your guess is probably better.

The 'execution' on the lens could be far better than the 18-135 but on paper I don't really see a lot of reason why to develop this lens.

Maybe replacement for 17-70 with no sdm and new HD coatings.
18-70 f/2.8 is possible too but I would think that would be a DA* lens assuming they continue that.

I think we will have a better idea on Tuesday as this might be the new kit lens for the k-3.

If it is WR, i would buy one faster than you can say "divorce"...

I think a 16mm starting point for an APS-C is a true differentiator.

Maybe it is optimized for video - DC or stepper motor, etc.

Heck, the 18-135 has gotten some bad press, it could be good to have a different option for that reason alone.

I don't know anyone who has used it who is particularly unhappy. My dad and brother both have copies and they are pretty good. A lot happier folks with this lens than with the DA *16-50, which is why I had thought this would be a replacement for that lens.

I wasn't thrilled with either lens. The 18-135 was OK but was too pricey for me for the performance. My only use for it was for the WR and now I have other options in that range.

More likely it's optimized for the K-3's new AF system.

does anyone know if the new lens will be announced with the K-3? or later?
I hate to order a K-3 then have to order the lens seperately when they offer the kit later.

Based on the K-3 marketing material I've seen so far I'm pretty sure this lens will not be available in the foreseeable future. I think at this time only the 18-135 will be available in the kit, the body only will come later.

If it was going to be available soon, I would've thought we'd have a 'hint' of it already, with more rumors than we have now.

Frankly, I'd rather see a TC announced today — and which was promised during Reagan's administration or something like that — than a 55-300 WR, which is a rehash of the existing DA 55-300.
But that seems to be the pattern — K5II and DA560, K50 and K500, HD Limiteds and new flashes, K-3 and 55-300 WR ....
Or, one new thing, one rehash.

Yes that seems likely. If the lens was coming before the end of the year it would make sense to market it at the same time as Pentax's new high-end body - even if the availability was going to be later.
