da 18-70 f/2.8

Sorry if there is already a thread discussing this rumored lens but I couldn't find it. Curious what everyone thinks this new lens might be. My guess is Da 18-70 f/2.8-4.0, hopefully WR too. Price? Maybe $650-700, based on da 18-135 being $500 and da 18-270 being $800.

I'll be damned if it was just a straight DA 18-70 F2.8, instead of a DA*18-70 F2.8, or a DA 18-70 F2.8-4.

Well the new lens roadmap showed that the DA 18-70 zoom changed from a * to a non-star lens. So maybe it was originally supposed to be DA* 18-70 but then because of engineering difficulties or cost overruns, they decided to make it just a DA zoom. I'd be happy if it would be competitive with the new Sigma 17-70 contemporary zoom, but with WR too. I'd be shocked if it was f/2.8 across the entire range but then again, Sigma showed that f/1.8 constant zoom was possible, so maybe Pentax/Ricoh has another trick up its sleeve...

Basically, I see this zoom as replacing the DA 17-70 f/4, rather than a DA* 16-50 replacement.

Or it is a HD AW version with DC motor to replace both 17-70 and 16-50.

How about 16-85 F/3.5? Is that doable without being too huge? Maybe that's asking too much... Even 16-85 F/2.8-4.5 or constant F/4 would be really nice though. But I just want it to _come out_ so I can choose between whatever it is and the new Sigma 17-70...

Well, they already have a 17-70mm F4, so it would make sense for them to release a slightly wider/longer lens with a faster (albeit variable) aperture. IDK if they will ever be able to compete with the Sigma 17-70mm regardless.

Well if it is WR and sharp as the 17-50s, then it'll compete. The Sigma 17-70 is sharp, but not THAT sharp.

And it's also a DC and not a DG lens. Good point- weather sealing would be a plus. I don't think any other brand currently offers a weather-sealed 17-70mm. Most of Nikon's weather sealed lenses are for FF.

Yeah but I don't think the 18-70 will be FF compatible.. considering the 17-70 F4 and the 16-50 are not. Would be amazing if it were though!

It definitely won't be, being a DA lens. 18mm on FF would make it huge!

My feeling is that DA18-70/2.8 is addressing the Canon 24-105/4, which is a fantastic prosumer lens for an FF.
But this version for Pentax could do the same trick of catching up with FF with the APS-C's f2.8, same as Sigma does with their f1.8 lenses.

I'd buy this lens at a constant f2.8, but not f4 or variable. Too much competition there. Agree with Uluru - it would address/'equivalize' the 24-105 f4 L, a lens I have often admired.

Or they could release a modern AF version of my SMC A 35-105 f3.5. That would also make me happy.

I like the idea of this lens as I find my DA* 16-50 to be too short sometimes but a constant f/2.8 would make for a very substantial lens - a lot of glass needed.

The roadmap clearly shows a zoom passing the 80 mark. A 18-85 or better a 16-85, would be a great all purpose zoom.
