Another interpretation of that bump as I found out on my home forum (pentaxian.nl):

In previous Pentax models the motor for the mirror and the shutter was ALWAYS combined. It's possible that the mirror and the shutter now have their own motor, meaning that the mirror can stay in the up position while taking pictures in live view.
This is not correct.

SInce the k-7 there are separate shutter, mirror and aperture control motors. Thats why you can take shots in live-view without cycling the mirror as well as do DOF preview.

the older k-x etc. series have a single motor, thats why the mirror has to cycle during live view. Much like the nikon d7000/d7100/d600, which cannot do DOF preview without cycling the mirror (very clunky approach). In this regards Pentax has been ahead of Nikon for a long time.

It finally looks like there is a discrete and elegant leather strap. Not the typical obnoxiously branded kitsch.

The protrusion on the left probably houses the mirror actuation motor. Just like in the k-5 series the protrusion on the right houses the aperture actuator motor. It seems it may have been moved further away from the mirror box compared to the k-5 series in order to possibly:

- accomodate a larger prism/viewfinder assembly

- a larger mirror drive motor for higher frame rates

- or a larger mirror box.

If rumors are true that the k-3 body is to be shared with the future FF body than this makes sense. A larger design volume for the mirror and viewfinder assembly will allow for:

- a bigger viewfinder for the APS-C model

- enough room for a FF mirror and viewfinder assembly in the FF model.

This might also explain the delay in releasing the k-3 which was initially rumoured to be ready last photokina. If Pentax management made a decision to market a FF model as revealed around last Photokina, then they may have changed plans to share a common platform with the k-3 and FF models in order to save development costs. The delay in releasing the K-3 may be for effort required to redesign for a common platform.
A larger or more bulky body that is shared to support both FF and APS-C insides doesn't fit in the Pentax logic. They're so proud of their APS-C lenses that are specifically designed for the APS-C format. They have no shared parts and no unneccesary bulk. And they all of a sudden flush that filosophy down the toilet by doing the exact opposite with a new flagship body. That makes little sense.

maybe the bulg on the left side is a high speed/high torque ultra quiet autofocus motor.

something. The added bulk doesn't seem to make much sense to go from 0.92x to the rumored 0.95x

There there's this old rumor:

Well that is not what I'm conserned of, you can easilly dig it out, when there is more room. But What I'm conserned about thou is that crap, what goes on the sensors and all the way to dual SD cards.

of course i have seen the dedicateds AF -Button

But with a lever you can easily fit 3-6 different modes and all of them are very fast chosen, better then any button + dail etc. crap.

I bet it's a pneumatic actuator for the mirror, so each time you take a photo, the camera goes *click psshh* *click psshh*.

Sure - if you aren't using your thumb to blindly flick the switch.

Either way, don't knock it till you try it.

Could also need more room for new autofocus system.
