Looks like this update includes a number of improvements, such as 1/2500 shutter speed, 47mm eq. crop mode and a number of improvements to image quality.

Makes me wish I had a GR!

I really do not see the value of these "crop" modes when shooting!
This is more of a limitation than of a feature.
It is always possible to make the "crop" in post-processing without limitations (the entire image is available and you can decide to crop at 39mm, 31mm, 52mm, anything you want and also any format you want, 4 / 3, 3/2, 3.21 / 1.89, 3,89,2,001 ...).

Or am I totally wrong with this point of view?

Yes you are IF (big if) the viewfinder is properly cropped as well (and still of proper use of course).
Framing square is not the same at all as framing 3/2 or 4/3.

At leazst on the screen it should be VERY easy to implement.
Personally I'd welcome a proper 1:1 crop in viewfinder. But then I'm a 6x6 addict

Not "totally wrong" but unless I'm mistaken, any crop mode also applies to the metering and focussing. So where you'd have a lot of sky in a 28mm shot where you'd want to crop only the lower portion (foreground) of the image, it might come out underexposed. I'm hoping that, when using crop mode, the metering system actually disregards anything outside the crop zone so that the portion you want/need is correctly exposed.

Not sure if this is actually the case and if it's not, you end up being totally right after all

Works great!

It's not documented anywhere, but program mode with this new update works differently - it used to keep aperture stuck at f/4.0 even with times like 1/2s, which made it hard to use in low light conditions. Now it will fully open aperture to keep shutter speed in hand hold-able range (around 1/40) and also close to f/5.6 much sooner when light is good. I think this is much more usable especially with wonderful lens like this.

And that's besides new Maximum Aperture Mode that will keep aperture at f/2.8 as long as possible.

Over 5M. 2912x1936. Not for large prints, but still usable in emergency.
