Could it be possible to create a silent in-body motor ?
That could be freaking awesome.

A DC motor in this lens would be nice, But a stepper motor could be even better. Like in those STM lenses from Canon.

Great! A little late for me - I gave up waiting for this obvious addition to the lens line and got the plain 55-300 a couple of years ago.

I am the same - my cunning plan, buy a K3 with the 55-300WR bundled lens, then sell my existing 55-300 and hopefully I can achieve that for the the price of the K3 body on its own. If this plan plays out then I get the 55-300WR lens upgrade for free

Here is hoping the math works

Great! I have said several times I will get this lens the moment it is available with WR, and that is a promise I intend to keep. Unless price is absurdely high.

It doesn't take any more time to pop on a Raynox than it does to put a Tamron into Macro mode. The difference is that you can get up to 8X greater magnification.
Good catch on the 150, I was thinking 250 from earlier musings.

Long overdue update to an immensely versatile lens

I have used the smc DA version of this lens on the K-7 as my inexpensive telephoto workhorse for years now and never regretted it. When I got it, my only reservation about it was that, unlike its even cheaper (yet IQ-wise somewhat inferior) 50-200mm WR cousin, it wasn't weather-sealed. It may be a consumer lens, but as such it has proven a fairly capable performer right up to its perfectly usable 300mm, and given the travel-friendly size and weight, the odds are that it will be in your bag or already on your camera when you need it!

As I don't care much about video, the screw-driven AF has never been an issue to me. It is not slower than SDM (nor DC, unless proven) and unlikely to break. Silly as it may sound, I'm kinda tempted by the update, which also sports the improved HD coating, and pleased to see Ricoh taking its existing line of Pentax lenses seriously. Remember the old saying, If it ain't broke, don't fix it? As underdog compared to Canikon, a manufacturer like Ricoh will have to hedge their bets and direct their resources to where they are sorely needed, so this update to the well-received smc DA 55-300mm actually makes sense to me ...

I have always had a tinge of regret about selling my DA55-300 in favour of the glorious DA*300. I might just have to get this new version for travel.
Looking carefully at the picture, are the letters DC just visible at a tangent on the red ring??

I wonder how they are managing to make the zoom weather resistant?

You're probably right, but that second letter still looks like a "C" to me. Probably wishful thinking.

Woke up this morning to find the clothes washer is kaput. It's 25 years old and I've repaired it 5 or 6 times before but I'm done with it. So it looks like we are getting a new washer / dryer. Which will dry up the expendable income a bit. Oh, well maybe black Friday will be a good day to buy camera stuff......
