I wonder how they are managing to make the zoom weather resistant?
By adding seals wherever needed.

looks like screw drive.

Sad to see if something like that would happen

Just HD and at least WR but thats it
I've been waiting for an updated 55-300mm, but only if it was silent focusing and not screw drive, so I agree it's not much of an announcement for me either.

To expect a DC motor is unrealistic and it is unfair to burn Ricoh about its absence. A DC motor can not turn that big optical elements. That's why all the other lenses with bigger elements have the SDM.

Of course the motor must be dimensioned to correspond to the load for each lens. I'm sure that there is not just one size of DC motor available.

Besides, are not both DC and SDM the same type of micro motor, just two names?

Most of the latest Pentax lenses with built in motor use DC motor, and the DC motor may even be more powerful (and faster) than SDM.

HD Pentax-D FA 645 90mm F2.8 ED AW SR Macro
HD Pentax-DA 560mm F5.6 ED AW
Both use DC motors, so maybe Pentax even abandoned SDM motor for HD lenses.

But I don't expect built in motor in then new HD DA 55-300 mm lens.

The 18-135 is different than other Pentax lenses in that the focus ring precedes the zoom ring. I suspect the 55-300 would require a clean sheet design in order to accommodate an internal motor.

Semi-related question: is it possible that Ricoh is substituting HD for SMC because Hoya wouldn't sell or license it? I just bought a new pair of glasses, and the lenses are HMCoated.

Specifications are available:

PENTAX - HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED WR

• Long to Super telephoto with zoom ratio of 5.5 times
• New HD (High Definition) Coating
• Weather Resistant
• Portraits, sports, events and wildlife

With a zoom ratio of approximately 5.5 times, the 55-300mm range covers a wide variety of telephoto focal lengths, perfect for any enthusiast looking for a long, highly versatile second lens. Complete with the PENTAX HD coating, this lens is capable to capture expressive portraits, fast action sports, music events, and wildlife, in any weather condition.

With its zoom coverage of approximately 5.5 times, the lens offers focal-length coverage from 84.5 medium telephoto to 460mm super telephoto (in the 35mm format), making it ideal for use with a wide variety of subjects and applications including portraits, sports, events and wildlife. It incorporates two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements in its optics to effectively compensate for chromatic aberrations over the entire zoom range and deliver well-defined, true-to-life images.

The lens features weather-resistant construction to prevent the intrusion of water and moisture into the lens barrel. When the lens is mounted on a PENTAX weather-resistant digital SLR camera body, the user is assured of greater durability and reliability when shooting in rain or mist, as well as at locations subject to a spray or splash.

The PENTAX-original SP (Super Protect) coating repels dust, water and grease to keep your lens clean and your image quality at its peak.

Treated with HD coating, a PENTAX-exclusive multi-layer lens coating, enjoy higher light transmittance and lower reflectance than conventional multi-layer coatings. This means it produces sharp, clear images free of flare and ghost images, even under such adverse lighting conditions as backlight.

The PENTAX-original Quick-Shift Focus System allows instant switching from autofocus to manual focus operation.

Does it really have QS?? That would be awesome! But Pentax brochures often incorrectly claim that a lens has QS. Some Pentax brochures claim the 40mm XS has QS, for example. (and it doesnt have QS, I know because I have it)

HD is better than SMC, so it wouldn't make sense.

Exactly. My DA (non-L) certainly has quick shift.
