Is the proposed 24mp sensor supposed to be better than any other 24 mp sensor? The specs mentioned do not really appeal to me other than 24mp which is just fair. If they were sticking with a crop sensor why not make it 32mp - 36mp and be done with it?
Because they're probably relying on Sony for the sensor. 24MP is the affordable APS-C "state-of-the-art" at this time. This sensel density is equivalent to 54MP on FF, so you could also ask, "Why did Nikon only choose 36MP for the D800? Answer: "Because that was the same sensel density as the 16MP Sony sensor in the D7000".

I was not aware that a 36mp APS-C existed?

Then why is it possible for Canon to produce a camera capable of 12+ fps yet is rated for 400,000 shutter cycles?

Obviously, for the K-3 to be price-competitive, Pentax cannot put this sort of mirror/shutter assembly into the K-3. The EOS-1D X costs $6800 but the K-3 needs to be priced within $1500.

--DragonLord
I think Pentax will have sensibly looked at the situation and decided it's more cost effective for a Pentaxian to just get the camera serviced after 200k and a new shutter installed.

I didn't see that either. I also don't see a way to send commands to the camera in their description.
I don't actually see that using a smartphone in this fashion would be of any practical use.
Especially after viewing DR's video showing the Sony QX100

NO Tilting and Swivel LCD Screen ....once again !!!????Ok not for me I will pass that one again....and I don`t care what people says here ,to many times where I really missed a tilting LCD Screen ...
I personally have used a tilt screen on a couple of canon bodies. Not overly useful for me. Sure if you do a lot of low angle work it might help out, but i feel the advantages are outweighed by the disadvantages. I bought pentax for the rugged build and weather sealing to use as a "follow cam" for my snowboarding/skiier buddies.
(Yes, photographing people whilst sliding down a mountain at about 30-40km/h, on essentially a plank of wood, not paying full attention to the ground infront of me, with a couple grand worth of camera gear sounds stupid, but alas, you do what is needed)

Never the less, I see swivel screens as the kind of thing that makes a camera more fragile. Ie more places for water and dust to ingress, points of weakness if handled roughly.

WHat??? aps-c and 24mp? and you guys are happy? come oN!! this is ed up! and what to do the 8.3 frames when at the same time Pentax focus speed is below average versus other cameras of Nikon and Canon... and APS-C? again? i find no reason to upgrade from my K-5... disappointed...
24Mp... I had enough as 14Mp on my K-7, the 60% more pixels will make life easier and give me more headroom to crop. Either way pixel count now days matters very little for most amature photogs, they usually don't shoot for billboards or blow images up to A1(or larger). Sure files will take more space and slower to handle, but i mean storage and computing power are so cheap now that nearly everyone has (or will have very soon) a computer able to handle them.

8.3fps... I hope will be balanced between high FPS and low shutter noise. Cameras that shoot at 10fps make a hell of a racket based on past observations, not a desirable attribute.

Focus speed, in terms of response current pentax dslr's lag a bit behind the Cankions, put them in a low light ( -1 to -3Ev) situation on the other hand, pentax should get a lock when the others can't. And that is based on current models, the rumoured specs indicate a vastly improved AF module for the K-3. And finally you need to consider lens AF performance as well. Put the Pentax 18-135mm DC WR lens on and you will see very snappy AF performance on most recent cameras, or any of sigmas HSM compatable lenses. (I can not speak for SDM as i have not used it before.)

Wait and see before you judge a camera based on "leaked/rumoured" spec's. Get to a brick and mortar, and test it yourself when it is availiable.

Crazy.

So many mal-contents right now. Just wonder if they are all really long term users of Pentax cameras, or if they are just showing up to rain on the parade.

Having shot with Pentax cameras for the last 11 years, this camera definitely seems to address the issues that have been present for a long time, that Hoya in particular, never addressed.

There are a certain number of people who stand on one particular feature (tilt screen, full frame, whatever) and if a camera doesn't have it, then it is a failure. But that's why there are a lot of cameras out there. And if Pentax's don't work for you, buy from Sony or Olympus or Canon. Life is just too short to fret about a company that doesn't even now you exist not paying attention to your individual needs.

Any news on the battery the camera uses? I wonder this can share the same batteries as my k-01and k-7....

These specs are ridiculously awesome - relatively speaking to a K20D... 14.6mpx and 3fps :P

As said many times before; 24mpx would provide lots of room for cropping. And, every once in a while I do print my photos on canvas (personal collection of photos I'm proud of)... can only go so big with 14mpx + cropping!

24MP + APS-C + faster fps + good low-light AE & AF performance + tracking AF + sufficient buffer depth & buffer clearance speed = Awesome potential for sports/action photography.

So, as someone who has shot a lot of sports with a K20D & a K-5, I'll be very interested to see how well the AF tracking and shot buffer performs.

Dan.

Sounds like the AF would address one of my complaints on the K5 I have. Still, I wont get it right off, I'll probably wait until nearly next year. I have bills to pay (and a lens I need first and a 3D printer I need before Christmas too.

I was in Sydney Harbour on Saturday for the International Fleet Review - do you have any idea how hard it is to take photos of an F-18 Hornet doing manoeuvres/fly-bys with a K20D + 55-300mm :P

I am curious also, mainly the buffer in my case.

I have done it with a K-100D and a K7... I rather have my tooth pulled with pliers.

K-3 is looking for me at least to be substantial upgrade from my current K-5's. I like that they are keeping the fantastic ergonomic layout of the K-7s and 5s, as in not too big nor too small but with tank like build. Pentax have slowly but surely improved the AF with every release, they might not be the swiftest but they are for sure not the most inaccurate. Dual cards are useful, improved screen at the back also very welcome. 8.3fps must point at improved processing in the data flow internally. Am curious about the new viewfinder / optical focusing, might mean a new Katzeye needed :-), small price to pay for the other improvements bundled. Looking like a home run in APSC land and a worthy flagship for the Pentax faithful. I will be getting one after the initial rush methinks.

That would be wildlife action in my case:

Common Swift K5 with sigma 150-500.

I`ve spend 4 entire afternoons to get this common swift in flight, these animals can reach a staggering 200 Km/h and do the craziest turns. The K5 AF-c just can`t keep up and most of the time won`t even lock on. Worst of all, when finally achieving focus, it will jump and lock into the background when anything appears behind the bird (i.e. Trees, hills, bridges, etc) Improved tracking combined with color-awareness sounds like a gift from heaven to me
