Sometimes it's easier to do an upgrade of every component of the system. Lens upgrades, when tied to optimised manufacturing processes and plans for the next 5 years or more, do make sense too.
However, the main weakness in Pentax system — as many users perceived — was not the quality of its lenses. Real weakness was the K-mount cameras performance and the camera-related issues.
Pentax never addressed them because it never had any aspiration to kick into more serious waters of its gameplay. Thus, Pentax became a victim of its own mediocrity.
So everyone was waiting for new cameras, and judged Ricoh by the inactivity and silence in that area. Mind you, even with the K-3, they haven't solved all the problems: they have only started addressing them. The next immediate step is adding more cameras utilising K-3's tech, because only one camera cannot "save" Pentax. That tech must find its way in other cameras too.
