I just put K5II and K3 specsheets next to eachother and there are a lot of blanks and comma`s in the K-3 sheet. I don`t think these specs are complete yet.

That spec sheet is a let down.. where's the complete spec sheet?

What happened to the 40MP sensor shift tech for one thing? The "hybrid" OVF.. etc etc

I think I can relax now and sell my Pentax gear to buy a decent Tele for my D800e's

one less.

Buffer depth: 60 JPEG, 23 RAW @ 8.3 fps, up from 30 JPEG, 22 RAW @ 7.0 fps on the K-5.

Slower speeds:
  • 100 JPEG, 32 RAW @ 4.5 fps
  • 200 JPEG, 52 RAW @ 3.0 fps
Not bad at all, and much, much better than the D7100. It's also a great step up from the K-5. UHS-I support definitely paid off here.

I'm sold on the K-3. It's only a matter of time...

I wanted, without any realistic hope whatsoever, switching between 10 fps and 5 fps (raw).

Having switching between 8.3 fps, 4.5 fps, and 3 fps is better than I could have realistically hoped for.

More from the official spec sheet: Real-Time Scene Analysis System with 86,000-pixel RGB metering sensor. This is just like the professional C&N cameras, and works together with the SAFOX11 AF system to deliver fast, accurate AF as well as reliable exposures. No one else has delivered this feature to the enthusiast class: neither the D7100, 70D, nor 7D use a metering sensor of this caliber. (The D7100 uses a 2016-pixel RGB array; the 70D and 7D use a 63-zone iFCL metering sensor. The EOS-1D X, D4, and D800 use similar high-resolution metering sensors.)

It does use a different sensor, unlike the two versions of the K5 which use the same sensor and it looks to me like Ricoh has really invested in R and D for this camera, unlike Hoya. I just don't think people realize how bare the cupboard was when Ricoh took over and that they have been building from the ground up.

I am very pleased with what Ricoh has done. They have carefully filled in the APS-C line up -- K500, K50, K5 II and now the K3. They also have better tech available to them. All of this is the ground work that is necessary to launch a full frame camera. What I see here is that Ricoh does their homework, looks at the market carefully and then launches well refined products that match up well against the competition. This is a winning strategy over time.
I'm glad to see a credible photographer member write what I've been saying (from a business analyst perspective) for a year now. Ricoh will make Pentax a credible third camera company over time. Yes, they are incrementalists, but they are deliberate and relentless about it and passionate about quality and dependability.

Now they need to update SDM to actually focus as fast as Canon's USM or Sigma HSM.

in my opinion they are faster from 0 to infinity but point to point is not so different...the problem with pentax is latency and second thought of af system that slow down linked to poor tracking.....clearly if you go to 0 to infinity you will still be far behind but i shhot a lot and i rarely go from 0 to infinity when tracking.

I tried the DA* 55mm and the Sigma 50mm F/1.4 on my K-7 when I was first looking for a 50mm. The HSM was noticeably faster. I use a Canon 7D with some different Canon glass from time to time and the AF jumps to lock much faster than my K-5. I currently don't own any SDM lenses simply because of their history and relatively slow speed. I either go with the FA LTD screw drive or my Sigma lenses with HSM.

yes they are faster but from point to point where you go when using the lenses in rel life...especially with long tele the sdm is good enough..the problem where the af system. clearly the sdm is slower but can be better now.
ii have sdm and hsm while from 0 to infinity hsd is faster...from 5 meter to 10 for example the difference is shorter. in real word you don't go often from 5 to infinity abruptly.

K-3 has 92 weather seals, up from 77 in the K-5 (and 81 in the K-30 and K-50).

For comparison, the Canon EOS-1D X has 76 seals.

On another note, battery life (without flash) has gone down from 980 shots to 720 shots. This is well below average for this class; extra batteries are a good idea. The K-3 accepts the same D-LI90 battery as the K-5. A new AC adapter K-AC132 is available; the older K-AC50 will not work. (Extra D-LI90 batteries are cheaper than their C&N counterparts: the D-LI90 costs $40 but the Canon LP-E6 costs $60 and the Nikon EN-EL15 costs $55.)

Frankly, this isn't an issue for me. I rarely exhaust one battery on my K-5, let alone both. When I get the K-3, I will probably get the D-BG5 and an extra battery to go along with it, and I will have four batteries to work with.

I shoot events and used both on the K-7. In the real world the Sigma HSM was faster to acquire and lock than the DA*55mm with SDM. I wasn't sitting around testing it on a brick wall. I have not tried an SDM lens since getting the K-5. I tried 2 copies of the DA*55mm because I really wanted a WR lens in this focal length, but AF consistency and speed was not very good on either copy.

Shooting outdoor events I often do go from 5 to infinity "abruptly".

I started a separate thread about the K-3's video capabilities:
