Its interesting what Pentax will deliver in this space vs Sigma's 18-35mm f1.8. Which by all accounts is optically excellent for what is actually a zoom.
I heard that Pentax is working hard to release the Sigma 18-25 f1.8 under the Pentax name and that is why its not available for Pentax at the moment.

They will be paying a fee to Sigma and sell it more expensive of course-what with HD coating and all...

... Just kidding!

Lol I did wonder! That would be annoying, to pay more!

For me, the ltd. 20-35mm will be great for travel. I am addicted to the heavy Samyang 14mm, and I'd like to have a light, high quality lens between 18 and 40mm. There is the DA 21mm ltd., but since a small 20-35mm ltd. appears to be in the works, why not wait a bit longer? The problem is, I was expecting to see it earlier this year...

Not to discourage you, but you may as well see it only in 2014, and well after the CP+.

I know. I trained myself into accepting the idea

Good point on the FA 20-35mm F/4 being a lot smaller and lighter than the Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8.

Maybe Ricoh will manage to make this new Limited zoom into a pancake (or close), which would have its advantage a lens like the Sigma. The Pentax lens would be a compact, travel lens with decent aperture (F/4, F/3.5, maybe a bit better) and great IQ, while the Sigma would be a no-compromise, fast but bigger and heavier lens with great IQ as well.

Let's face it, when I'm shooting people in the public during music festivals, they tend to be shy with my rather big DA16-45mm pointed at them, so using a Sigma 18-35mm wouldn't better in these circumstances. Having a compact 20-35mm-ish lens could be useful at these moments.

Well, products on the roadmap usually hit the market much longer after the expected date (case in proof: DA*60-250mm and DA 560mm, just to mention these two ). So if the roadmap says a product in development could be released in 2014, assume it will actually be available in 2015-16. This is a safe way not to get your hopes too high.

Quite frankly, I'd rather go for a WR replacement of the 12-24mm F/4 lens, or another ultra-wide prime with WR or DA* designation, but I'd be tempted by a compact Limited zoom just for its compactness when shooting shy subjects.

If this lens were anything like the Sigma 18-35, it would be DA*. If it were based on the Pentax FA 20-35, it would be most likely to come as a plain DA. So, I don't think it will stray too far from the characteristics of the existing DA Limiteds.

DA Limited seems to mean small, metal construction, no WR, modest max aperture, good optical quality. So I expect the limited zoom to be along those lines. Imagine a modern-day version of the F35-70, with a focal length adjusted for APS-C and the limited construction. If it only covered APS-C, would it be feasible to make it as small as the DA35 Limited Macro?

As good as the K-3 seems to be, I have to say I was a bit disappointed that nothing on the roadmap was delivered at the same time. I felt certain we would at least get the teleconverter. It also seems strange that the 50mm Macro has not been given the WR treatment like the 100mm yet. I expect that to come quite soon.

And probably the most expensive in the DA Ltd line.

Quite possibly - but it could also be the best value DA if it can replace a couple of prime ltd's.

Agreed. An F4 lens? unless it's 12-24, it's kind of a snoozer.

Glad someone agrees!

However I would think now should Pentax release a copycat f1.8 - I'm not sure, they don't have the widest lens range so as long as the 18-35mm can be got for Pentax then perhaps going the light travel route would provide a differentiator.

Not sure the 20-35mm length makes sense though even then.

What? The sigma is a 1.2 lens? Now that's impressive!
