DA zoom "Ltd" listed in lens road map

Just noticed the 20ish to 30ish zoom listed in the road map. (Looks like English and Japanese maps are identical now)
Does anyone have info on this?

Cheers

No info has been released by Pentax, and there aren't even rumors.

Most likely if will be a re-issue of the FA 20-35 with new coatings in a new body.

Regards

Chris

Most likely? That's pure speculation.

Well, some Ltd designs were based on old lenses. So it is possible Ltd Zoom is too.
Pentaxians are now used to habit that anything new is actually based on something old; not always a drawback, but it lacks true excitement.

I would have thought (hoped) that if it were a reworking of an old FA lens, then it would be FA and not DA to service the long-awaited Pentax FF. I'm actually more interested in the wide zoom (~12-28) on this roadmap; seems to be a replacement for the DA 12-24.

I agree. I'm pretty sure a Ltd series zoom will have a limited zoom range so it quality isn't compromised. The higher the zoom ratio, the more compromises you need to live with, and Limited lenses are supposed to be the top in terms of image quality, so I would expect a small zoom ratio of around 2x for such a lens.

Since the FA 20-35mm F/4 is still pretty sharp for an old film lens, it could indeed be adapted to the requirements of digital technology. I wouldn't rule out a deeper re-design of the lens, though, maybe with the final result being an APS-C dedicated, 18 to 20-35mm F/4 zoom (or something in that range).

What interests me is that this lens has the "Ltd" designation.
This would be somewhat of a first for a Pentax zoom?
As tigreblue says, the limited zoom range could mean the IQ is right up there.
Perfect for the new K-3 that I have ordered. (In "domestic camo" colors aka black)

The road map is tentative. We might not see the ltd. zoom this year...

Its interesting what Pentax will deliver in this space vs Sigma's 18-35mm f1.8. Which by all accounts is optically excellent for what is actually a zoom.

Therefore I'm not sure I'd pay for a 20-35mm f4 when I can purchase the Sigma option. I'm not sure what the benefit would be on APS-C

I guess for what I'm shooting (events mainly), I'm not too worried about the size, but I am worried about focus performance/speed, and low light capability/DOF. Hence for me, f4 doesn't seem that attractive.
