Going to cast a spell or necromancy on this thread....

During this month's Pentax outing here which was co-arranged by a former Pentax distributor sales rep, we had a casual conversation and he mentioned that he heard that Pentax had something to release/announce for December.
This was based on his info as a sales/parallel importer (since they are no longer official distro).
As to what it is, he did not know.

It might just be the release of the DA20-40 or something else..
Just a few days to Dec anyway.

This might be it since it should be in stores in two weeks.

I think if anything comes out in December, the most likely release would be compacts in time for CES.

So far the main casualty of the merger has been Ricoh's compacts. No update of the GXR, the GX series, the CX series or the PX series. Perhaps it's time to end some of these, but high end compacts are doing OK. I think a GX style camera with a one inch sensor would be great. A GR with a longer focal length would seem to be an easy sell. And what about a waterproof APSC camera, like a marriage of a Canon G1x and a WG?

A new macro 100mm lens would nice, but even more welcome would be a longer range remote control, and a new up-graded ring flash to cure some long standing problems in that area. But we definitely don't want Pentax churning out a new camera a month that differs very little from the previous model as is the habit of Canon, Nikon, etc.

Last ring flash is pretty recent is it not ?
And why a new 100 macro? Isn't the current one good enough ?

A revised GXR with a 35mm K-mount sensor option plus a built-in EVF, would be nice. Especially as it could probably undercut the Sony A7s in price.

Why? The current lens is one of the more recent in the current lineup. Or do you just want a HD-coated version of it?

It's also one of the best ones you can buy. Anywhere. And the cheapest weather sealed one. The only macro lens I personally want to see Pentax make is the Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x Ultra Macro Lens.

Jumping into the discussion...

It seems to me that Pentax offers a lot of options for Macro. Personally I used to have a Tamron SP90/2.8 macro and currently own a Pentax FA50/2.8 and a Sigma EX180/3.5. I've often though of adding the DA35/2.8 to my collection, but so far I could resist. By far my most used lens among the macros I own(ed) is the Sigma EX180/3.5. The reason being its working distance (which obviously is the longest among these lenses) which makes it the most versatile in the wild. Also its longish focal length allows it to double for other than pure macro wildlife photography, saving me a lot of lens switching I needed to do when I was still using the Tamron SP90/2.8.

Needless to say that for me the Macro lens that Pentax is "missing" would be a longer FA*200/4 like macro. Esp since there is no real alternative with other manufacturers currently offered (the Sigma EX180/3.5 being discontinued, and the new 180/2.8 not being made in Pentax mount). Well, of course, personally, I'm not really missing that lens since I have the "old" Sigma...

I think the 100mm macro is great, only thing I would do it is add a focus limiter.
But I think the person meant that it could be turned into a HD version

What would it do that the new weather-resistant 540 doesn't?

It would need at least one kind of sync port, and another port for external power.

I bought a 540 II, and then kicked myself mightily for assuming those features, present on its predecessor, would have been retained. Serves me right for acting on assumptions rather than hard information.

I'm keeping it, though. Thinking of supplementing it with a few LP180s.

So true. Hardly use my Pentax 100 after getting the Pentax A*200. The reach is incredible. For even more reach I use the Pentax DA300/Kenko tubes. If thats not enough the Q/100 or 200 takes over.

Had the Sigma 180 in my hands wth a chance to buy. Passed, since I had the 200. Wish I had bought it.
thanks
