But it seems to me it will be body for new DA limited design.

What do you think about it?
I just sold one off my K-01 body's and now only have the yellow one.

So if they make it a K-02 in yellow i'm on board.................

(am I the only one then?) Maybe a little more conservative design this time (for all other users)

Also 35/2.4.
I own that lens and I don't see how this zoom can replace it. The 35/2.4 is not too fast as it is; IMO Pentax should make it a 35/2 and stop producing the FA35/2 altogether. But at least it's cheap. This zoom, however, will be over a stop slower at the same focal length. And I don't expect it to be cheap.

Anyway, Pentax won't make the 35/2.4 a 35/2 because that would hurt sales of the 31/1.8. That's the problem we have: too many not-so-fast 35mm-ish lenses all fighting for a spot, with the benchmark set by the FA ltd. But that's another topic.

But why get this when there is tamron 17-50. Wider, faster, longer, cheaper possibly?
Unless it's smaller than 18 55 kit it doesn't make sense
Good question I keep asking myself having just bought a FA20-35 F4 when I already own a Tamron 17-50!!!!

Possible answers: wanted Pentax colours; good sharpness, not that the Tammie is a slouch above 20mm; I can live with constant F4 given my intended uses for it; much more compact and lighter than the Tamron 17-50 which translates to a lot smaller and lighter than a DA*16-50; FF wide angle insurance ('coz that would mean bye bye Tammie); couldn't decide between a FA20, FA24 or a FA28 prime; LBA attack!

The FA20-35 is incidentally almost identical in size to the 18-55 kit lens - a new lens moving to F2.8 would suggest a size increase, while shrinking image circle to APS-C would allow a smaller design. Depending on how that trade off works, maybe the new lens could end up about kit lens size...

Is it me, or are we seeing a trend with sigma making large lenses:

I think that's been true for quite awhile. Just compare the DA *55 to the Sigma 50 f1.4. Or any of the FA limiteds to similar lenses from Sigma. They are clearly at opposite ends of the spectrum. Sigma is trying to make sharp, well corrected glass and size is not a concern at all. Pentax wants small with better out of focus rendering and smoother transitions, but maybe not quite the same level of sharpness. I prefer the Pentax lenses in general, but I can understand someone else choosing Sigma.

Thank you for the translation of the Japanese text.

A HD Pentax-DA 12-28mm f/4 ("DA Wide Zoom" on the roadmap), deriving from Tokina AT-X Pro DX 12-28mm f/4, could appear in 2013 or later.

I think it is only a matter of time. Since the few months back, I had an impression that all Pentax contacts imply — in some way or other — at least two APS-C cameras for the K-mount to be announced in sequence. The one was obvious — a K-3 in the shape we all know. The other one is very much behind the curtains and well guarded.
I suspect, however, we should know more in early 2014.

With Ricoh running the show this just might be possible - however I do agree to an extent - the the lens roadmaps that have been released so far there is no indication that this lens will be WR. But on the other hand, they have been changing lens specifications on that roadmap for a while now initially this lens was listed as a * lens, now it isn't.

(...)
Nope. The one and only lens initially listed as DA* on the roadmap was the 16-80ish "DA* Zoom"

now listed as "DA Zoom"

And the DA zoom limited is fulfilled. So that leaves the DA wide zoom and the DA telezoom to come soon. Looks like the telezoom is next.

Do not forget the DA Zoom, the K-3's kit-lens to be.

I still think that lens [Zeiss Otus 55/1.4] is simply a re-purposed Medium format lens design.
I don't think so.

The design is quite different from the Distagon 50/2.8 for Hasselblad
(12 elements in 10 groups, with modern glasses, as opposed to 9 elements in 8 groups).

To get back on thread:

I see the DA 20-40 as very much in the philosophy of the other DA Limiteds,
maintaining high IQ (hopefully!) in a small package by keeping the aperture modest.

Personally, I appreciate that philosophy, especially for portability.

In that case, I am not buying it. I doubt it will be much (if at all) better than my 31mm Limited which is way faster to boot.
If you wanted a 20mm APS-C angle of view with your FA 31,
you'd either have to stitch on APS-C,
or use the FA 31 on 24x36mm.

to those who complain about the zoom range bear in mind that the smaller the zoom range is typically the higher the quality because fewer compromises were made in the design of the lens. My sigma 100-300 mm is a 1:3 zoom ratio, and that lens is extremely good. I have wanted a lens to fill the gap between my sigma 8-16 and FA31 - I do have a K24 f/2.8 but I really don't like the short focus throw on that lens (I have no Idea why they made it that short). The dof scale is most likely suited to the wide focal lengths of the lens, the upshot of this is that when it is used at the longer lengths it is a simple matter to predict where the DOF will be at the 40mm focal length by dividing the distances on the scale by two.
It is a quite bad design. The DOF scale is just a decoration since with its miniscule angular throw on the necessarily undamped focus ring it will be hard to focus manually. Presumably this is the reason for including the DC motor - the inherent backlash in the screwdrive would make screw autofocus a hit-and-miss affair. The retro Takumar-like ring is really naff ...

I've had similar thoughts with respect to the significant price hikes we've seen recently. A goal of making Pentax a "prestige" brand would be quite interesting, to say the least. And given the quality of the Limiteds, is not necessarily unrealistic.
