If it costs $350 then there is a high probability it will perform poorly, while the price of a lens isn't really an indicator of optical quality - it can give you a few ideas of how many corners were cut to produce it.

Taking a look at the construction quality of the new DA zoom lens I doubt they made many compromises in its optical design - it will most likely have aspherics to keep field curvature, coma and astigmatism under control as well as ED glass will help control aberrations throughout the zoom range.

I agree. This new lens, on paper, makes no sense to me. It is neither particularly wide nor long. did anyone wake up oday saying "I wish I had a 40mm f4 for my spa- camera?" I just don't see any gap that its filled by this lens, other than maybe the size factor. But f4 is SLOW, and there is no proof that it will be great wide open. I can't imagine paying more than $350 for su h a lens.
Here's a lens for you:
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens 8114B002 B&H Photo

A $350 lens would be slower, optically worse and made of plastic.

But it's unreal to order in Europe and USA for many years.
I'm sure you can e-mail them to ask if they ship worldwide, and now i tend to think they would.

If you never shoot street photos, travel photos and landscapes - yes. It's useless for you.
But not for me.

I just realized. Isn't this lens going to kill the DA 21mm limited?
It seems the DA 21mm is going to be under dog in every aspects accepting size issue, which sounds to be very minor consideration because the zoom limited is supposed to be small enough for real use.

Good thing is the 21mm price will drop, especially, used one.

Who knows... the 21mm is cheaper and smaller.

I won't be selling my DA21 any time soon, but I might get this lens anyway.

Or if you simply prefer other lenses for those kinds of photography (or for your photography in general).

If Ricoh are careful with pricing, this new zoom might actually increase sales of the 21mm Limited because costing much less it could look a bit of a bargain compared to its much larger and more expensive zoomy cousin. if the new zoom isn't priced at a significant premium to the Limited primes, it would simply cannibalize their sales (unless for some reason Ricoh want to phase them out). I'd have thought the main bone of contention is whether folks out there still want to make a substantial investment in a premium APS-C-only lens. Since Ricoh are sure to have thought about this very carefully, my guess is that the existence of this lens suggests that one or more premium APS-C bodies are in the pipeline: like the lenses, a "little jewel" of a new body to make the perfect companion - and perhaps with an EVF. It would be as close as Ricoh can get to a Fuji X camera and the whole retro vulturefest without a new mount. Yes, K-02 rides again but this time done right. Of course, who knows ...

Having just upgraded all the DA Limiteds with HD coating and rounded aperture blades, I don't think Ricoh will phase them out any time soon. But if you are right and this zoom is priced way above the 21mm, then it's quite an expensive lens for what it is. The 18-55 kit is also small and light, has a bigger range and isn't much slower. I wonder how many people would be willing to pay the extra money for just the increase in image quality and build.

Still, I agree this lens has some something... but that won't be enough for me I'm afraid.

I expect this lens to be as sharp as the primes and a much better performer than the kit lens. Plus it looks much better. I don't really see competition with the kit lens(which is so cheap it might as well be free). More with the limited primes in that range and maybe with the 17-70 and 16-50 but those lenses have a different philosophy.

The lens could be made of pure gold but it's still 40mm f4 which is very meh.

That is still as fast as all the F4 zooms out there.
