Size and DC motor.

Same reason why I got Tamron 28-75 before getting the DA 40, Tamron gets the shots, but DA 40 is much more pleasant to use.

Pentax has the guts to call this a limited, so it must be really small. They don't even dare call the DA 100 a limited just because of the size, even though it truely is a limited.

Not sure why it couldn't be 2.8 throughout the range?
I'm guessing size. I keep my fingers crossed.

I'll stay out of this thread until it's announced. No use debating about a lens that is not official yet.

Only the lens designers know for sure, but I'm guessing it would have made it heavier.

Perhaps it will come in cheaper as well? With the DA*16-50 at $1200 at B&H, and around $800-900 on sale, if the DA 20-40 Ltd can come in under $800 MSRP, that'd be great. If it was closer to $600 MSRP, that would be amazing.

No, but that seems to be where it gives acceptable sharpness across the frame:

Pentax SMC-DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] WR - Review / Lens Test - Analysis
Remember, that test is refocused for the corners, for better or worse - the author was saying corner performance is actually worse than that.

I tried the lens, I didn't think it was *that* bad in practice but it was pretty clear the lens wasn't great.

But how come its limited and not *? I thought "limited" means prime, very small, with metal construction.. shouldnt this be *? * are often zooms, with some weather sealing
Is this the first "limited" zoom?

The same post also mentioned pentax Q 08 wide zoom lens. Very nice! This is the lens need update in Q system! Particularly after the releasing of nice 06!
Just wonder what a 07 lens will be. I hope an a little wider (30mm) prime? or a 400mm prime!

This would be the first Limited zoom. With regards to the name, I don't think it should really be restricted to specifically primes - it's just that primes are easiest to make small and awesome.

If it lives up to the Limited name, it will be small, solid metal construction, nice hood construction (crossing fingers), and great performance while being slower aperture than similar lenses at the same price.

I like your two extremes

Presumably the field curvature is not as extreme at 24mm as it is at 18mm.
Photozone don't say how much refocusing is going on,
or whether they're measuring tangential or sagittal resolution
(Optyczne/Lenstip post an average).
But that discussion doesn't belong in this "News and Rumors" thread.

@Normhead's point seemed to be that, for him,
the DA 18 - 135 covers the work that this new lens can be expected to do,
while I'm hoping that the Limited will be usable from f/3.5 at 24mm.

Size and DC motor...

Is that worth going from a 3+x zoom at f2.8 down to a 2x zoom at f2.8-4?

Up to the buyer I guess.

Not if you want your search engine to find it.

Well, the focal length range and aperture(s) are not that alluring, but if its build and performance are truly limited, it will be an interesting lens.

It could be just me, but I don't see the point of this lens when you could also go for a fixed f2.8 zoom, a 17-70 f/4 or 2.8-4, or faster primes.
